Science  Olympiad

With our school participating in the upcoming state and possibly national Science Olympiad, it’s important that HMS students and staff are better informed about it. According to its official website, Science Olympiad is the “premier team STEM competition in the nation, providing standards-based challenges to 6,000 teams at 425 tournaments in all 50 states'' in other words it’s a series of build and general knowledge events designed to test students’ abilities in Science fields. It starts early in the school year when students begin building their devices and studying for their events which they will use for the regional competition in march. This competition will be divided into two categories which are  “B” which contains high school and “C" which contains middle school and will take place from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm at BSC followed by an awards ceremony that takes around one hour. The two teams with the most points adding up their event placements will then go to the state competition at NDSU in fargo. At the time of writing this article, the state competition has not taken place yet, but when it does it will be almost the same as regionals except that the students will need to take a bus to fargo the night before and a bus back afterward. If the team makes it to the national competition, it will be extremely expensive and require a lot of fundraising. To learn more about this competition, Mr.Duttenhefner, the coach of our Science Olympiad team, shared his knowledge. The first question asked to him was if he believed our Science Olympiad team could go to nationals to which he responded ”Absolutely”. Then he was also asked why students should join Science Olympiad to which he responded, ”It's not for every student but if you enjoy science and competing with some of the other best scientific minds in the state then it might be for you”.  Lastly he was asked why he coached Science Olympiad to which he said ”I love to see the success of the students who are in the Science olympiad even if they don't win medals”.

Hopefully the Science Olympiad team Wins state this weekend and continues on to nationals this May.
