Welcome, to the safety portion of the Bishop Brady FRC Team’s Website.
Our team won second place in safety in the 2009 Seattle regional with the safety captain, Jack Wisner.
One major change that Jack instituted was overhauling our first aid kit. He bought fresh supplies, and restocked the kit, which we now do yearly, and added several burn injury first aid supplies in 2017. Jack had also added some first aid quick reference placards from the American Red Cross which showed how to treat simple injuries, as well as how to do CPR. These are simple, basic instructions and have clear photos illustrating how to make a brace, treat a wound or a burn, and they are free!
In 2017, Safety Captain Ian Lindberg updated our safety binder by putting in new MSDS sheets, the FRC safety manual, a Red Cross First Aid manual, and a safety log. Every hour or so, the safety captain should perform an inspection of the pit, and then fill out a log sheet, detailing its status. We have also learned from Jack and other safety captains how important it is to clean the pit when the robot is not in there, both as a way to pass the time, and as a way to ensure that nothing is left on the floor to trip someone or damage the robot.
A timeless Latin motto that Jack has left us with is "Semper Paratus". It is the US Coast Guard’s motto, and it translates to "Always Prepared". He wisely preached that when you are a safety captain it is easier for you to have the item and not need it, then need the item and not have it. Simply put; just be prepared for almost to happen. An example of how we have learned from this philosophy is being sure to secure all robot batteries in transport. These heavy and hard batteries would become in vehicle missiles in a traffic accident and could easily injure a passenger or even destroy parts of the robot.
Our team will always appoint a safety captain who will be supported and supervised by an adult with safety training, but the ultimate responsibility falls on the team as a whole, as one or two people cannot be everywhere and see everything. In addition, we will have at least 2 people on the team, including mentors, currently certified and trained in CPR and first aid.
