Centennial High School NHS is an organization for juniors and seniors. Prospective members will have the opportunity to apply for the first time in the spring of their sophomore year, for membership to begin the following fall.
Not quite old enough for NHS? Not to worry! Right now, you can work towards:
1) Keeping your GPA up (minimum is a 3.5)
2) Establishing positive relationships with teachers for the recommendation letters
3) Take advantage of leadership opportunities
4) Document community service over your high school career
(your goal should be 20+ hours)
All of this will ensure that you are ready for the application when sophomore year comes!
The application is a point based system. On the application, they will be evaluated in 4 areas: scholarship, leadership, character, and service.
Scholarship: The minimum GPA requirement is 3.5. We will use the GPA that is run at the end of the most recent semester (fall semester before they apply). The higher their GPA, the more points they will earn on their application.
Leadership: NHS is an elite organization for exceptional students. These are the students who seek out leadership opportunities early on. These leadership experiences can be through the school, sports, organizations, churches, etc.
Character: They will need to get recommendations from two teachers. Start building relationships, and remember, that your actions, integrity, the way you treat others reflects your character.
Service: Our members already have made service to their school and community part of who they are on a daily basis, so it's important that our applicants already be practicing those skills. Seek out volunteer opportunities everywhere you can. This can be through your school, through a personal interest or talent, or with other organizations. Service needs to be something that benefits the community, and cannot be something that received a compensation (payment for a service).
When tracking your community service, simply create a spreadsheet and document:
When you served
What you did
How long you served
Who you served for
A contact number/email for your service supervisor
Being active in serving the community and school is a significant part of what we do as members. We invite you to join us in some of our service opportunities. These are great ways to build your service experience for the application, and see what it's like to be a National Honor Society member!
