Send Your Child to School Ready to Learn
In general, kids who eat breakfast have energy and arrive at school ready to learn. They also need the right amount of sleep (10-12 hours) to be alert and focused throughout the day. Be sure to leave enough time before bed to allow your child to unwind before lights out and limit stimulating diversions like TV, video games, and internet access.
Take Attendance Seriously
Children should stay home if they have a fever, are vomiting, or have diarrhea. Otherwise, it is important that kids arrive at school on time every day because having to catch up with classwork can be stressful and interfere with learning.
Make Time to Talk About School
When kids know parents are interested in their academic lives, they will take school seriously as well. Keep in mind that younger children have a difficult time with open-ended questions such as, “What did you do at school today?” because their day has contained so many activities that it is hard to choose which ones to talk about. More specific questions such as, “What did you work on in math today?” may generate more discussion.
Be Supportive of Homework
Establish a designated time and quiet place for students to complete homework. Supervise but resist the urge to offer help too quickly. Tasks that students master after trial and error on their part increases the retention of that knowledge and helps to build lifelong learning skills.
