1st Grade at a Glance

We will be diving right in to phonics, reading and writing. Students will read fiction and non-fiction books on their level each day, and practice using their phonics skills to craft stories and other text.

Students will learn addition and subtraction, time to the 5 minute intervals, money, shapes, place value and skip counting. We will spend time practicing math facts and other daily numeracy tasks.

We will use Studies Weekly to learn about our community, map skills, laws, geography and cardinal directions.

Our science curriculum, PhD Science, will teach us about weather, the Earth, force, matter and energy, as well as about organisims and environments.

We will continue to teach and practice the 7 habits. We will use Leader in Me curriculum to develop a deeper understanding of the 7 habits and their daily use. Students will be provided opportunities to help develop and strengthen their leadership and communication skills at school and at home.

Each student will be given the opportunity a device to use to access curriculum and learning site, while at school.

90% of students in first grade will read on or above grade level by May 2023. Each student will track their lead measures daily using a tracking calendar. Be on the lookout for information about what your students WIG is!

First grade students are expected to be leaders at Mound Elementary. Students will be respectful, responsible and kind! Any behavior issues will be addressed daily with communication from the teacher to the parent, via email or message or a phone call.
