Students in grade levels K-3 participating in the Boomtown Build Challenge will explore the growing needs of the people in our community.
Teams will help to imagine and create a building that solves a problem and makes life easier, happier, and/or more connected for the people that use it.
They will research how buildings are designed, built, maintained, and made accessible to all.
Students will use their imagination and the LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 to design and program their Boomtown Build Model, a structure created using elements from the Inspire set, to show their ideas for how to solve one or more of the problems they researched.
Keeping track of what they learn in their Engineering Notebook will allow them to share information about their research and Model in a Show Me poster at a FLL Jr Expo.
Further information, please see this year's Kick-Off video at the following link: https://youtu.be/mbc-KnyueZE. Please also contact the BISD LEGO League Team for additional information at legoleague@bisdmail.net.
In last year's season of "Mission Moon," students researched solutions to problems that arise when constructing a moon base.
How will astronauts acquire food, and how will breathable air be generated? What should the base look like? There are many other problems that may arise, and students researched several of them.
Students then designed and built a Moon Base using the LEGO® rocket ship and other elements from the Inspire Set as guidance and showed their ideas for how to solve one or more of the problems they explored.

Q: How much programming knowledge is required?
A: No programming knowledge is required to participate in FLL Jr! The Lego WeDo 2.0 Integrated Development Environment is graphically based, so programming is as easy as a drag and drop of a picture. For a brief introduction to the software, please see these two videos by LEGO Education: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9wiMjoySJg and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bChj1Tx4SGc
Q: Where do I download the software to program the WeDo 2.0 brick?
A: The WeDo 2.0 software is available on the LEGO Education website here: https://education.lego.com/en-us/downloads/wedo-2/software.
Q: Are there any costs to participate?
A: BISD pays for the cost for team registration, for equipment to participate, and for each team to enter one Expo per season. However, if a team chooses to have custom t-shirts/apparel/flair made, the team will be responsible for these costs.
Q: Who is required to pass a background check through the FIRST Robotics Youth Protection Policy?
A: Every adult member of every team is required to pass the YPP background check - including Mentors, Coach/Mentors, and Parent Guardian Volunteers. Even if you have already passed another background check through a school district or federal entity, you are still required to submit the YPP background check and Consent & Release forms. The background check is free, and completing both forms takes less than 2 minutes to complete.
Q: How do I apply for the YPP Background Check and become a documented member of a team?
A: The Team Administrators (the staff of Academic Innovation) will input team coaches and mentors into the FIRST Dashboard. Team coaches and mentors must SIGN UP on the FIRST Robotics website using their email. Once an account has been created, your user dashboard will have an invitation to complete the YPP Background check and the Consent & Release forms, and to accept the invitation to become a team member and receive access to the team’s Dashboard.
