Vela MS Library Helpers

Welcome to the Library Helpers webpage!

Introduction

The Vela MS Library Helpers Group is our team of volunteers which help us with a variety of tasks in the library. The library is one of the most visited places on campus, and both students and teachers use it often to find resources, print, or look for reading materials (for class or for fun). Being that this is such a busy facility, we often need help to keep things running smoothly. As such, our volunteers assist us with shelving books, arranging stacks, and straightening things out from time to time. Additionally, our team helps us occasionally with decorating and during special events.

If you are a Library Helper, please review the items on this page as they will be of assistance as you continue your duties.

If you are not a Library Helper but are interested in joining, please see Mr. Galvan or Ms. Lopez for more information.

When can I help throughout the day?

Helpers can help us during the following times:

  • Morning: 7:00am - 7:30am (you need to sign up for a library morning pass the day before)
  • Lunch (6th, 7th, or 8th) (you need to sign up for a library helper pass)
  • After-School: 3:00 - 3:30pm (no pass required)

Earning Volunteer Hours

Don't forget to sign out on the Library Helpers Time Sheet on the laptop at the circulation counter. It's very important that you do this so that we can track the number of hours that you've helped us throughout the year. Earning volunteer hours can help when you're applying to honor societies or other organizations.

Additionally, we award our top volunteers at the end of each semester and rank them by hours served. Make sure you sign-out on the time sheet every time!

Straightening Shelves (Aligning Spines)

As you walk through the library and shelve books, make sure you pay attention to the alignment of the books on the shelves. If you see that books are not aligned properly, try to straighten them out as best as you can.

Helping People Find Books

It's very important for all of us to find the books we want in the library. Oftentimes, though, students have difficulty finding an interesting book to read for their class or for fun. This is where we come in. By using Destiny Discover and our knowledge of the way the library is organized, we can help lead anyone to a great book.
