ITY aims to implement a soil sampling strategy to support the continued drive for education with partner schools, whilst targeting an area of vulnerability within the community, food security.

Aims of the Project

This project aims to establish sustainable and continuous improvements within rural Nepalese communities, to support both career development and agricultural strategies. These aims will be realised through the following objectives:

1. Establishing long-term, systematic scientific data collection activities, to enrich the learning experiences of both UK and Nepalese students. This will provide meaningful, practical experiences relevant to future careers in Nepal’s agricultural sector.

2. Collecting and analysing soil quality data to offer actionable insights for farmers. This will enable the implementation of strategies to improve crop yields, thereby enhancing food security in these regions.

ITY परियोजनाले माटो नमूना संकलन रणनीति कार्यान्वयन गर्ने लक्ष्य राख्दछ, जसले साझेदार विद्यालयहरूसँग शिक्षा प्रवर्धनको निरन्तर प्रयासलाई समर्थन गर्नेछ, जबकि समुदायको एक संवेदनशील क्षेत्र, खाद्य सुरक्षा, मा लक्षित गर्नेछ।

परियोजनाको उद्देश्यहरू
यस परियोजनाको उद्देश्य नेपालको ग्रामीण समुदायहरूमा दिगो र निरन्तर सुधार स्थापनागर्ने हो, जसले पेशागत विकास र कृषि रणनीतिहरूलाई समर्थन गर्नेछ। यी उद्देश्यहरू निम्नलिखित उद्देश्यहरू मार्फत पुरा गरिनेछन्:

• यूके र नेपाली विद्यार्थीहरूको सिकाइ अनुभवलाई समृद्ध पार्नका लागि दीर्घकालीन, प्रणालीबद्ध वैज्ञानिक डेटा सङ्कलन गतिविधिहरू स्थापनागर्ने। यसले नेपालको कृषि क्षेत्रसँग सम्बन्धित भविष्यका पेशामा प्रासंगिक अर्थपूर्ण र व्यावहारिक अनुभवहरू प्रदान गर्नेछ।

• किसानहरूका लागि कार्यान्वयन योग्य जानकारी प्रदान गर्न माटोको गुणस्तर डेटा सङ्कलन र विश्लेषण गर्ने। यसले बालीको उपज सुधार गर्नका लागि रणनीतिहरू कार्यान्वयन गर्न सक्षम बनाउनेछ, जसले यी क्षेत्रहरूमा खाद्य सुरक्षा वृद्धि गर्नेछ।

Birkdale School, Sheffield, has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to providing long-term, continuous partnership to communities in Nepal for the past 25 years. This collaboration has fostered mutual benefits for both the Birkdale community and the Nepalese partners involved. Over this period, the initiative has evolved from an initial school expedition into a fully operational charity. The charity, RNV Nepal, now works in parallel with two annual visits: one led by Birkdale School and the other comprising members of the RNV Nepal community.

During this time, Nepal has endured devastating natural disasters, prompting both the school and the charity to mobilise aid. The 2015 earthquake in Nepal prompted a notable rebuilding response, however, recent floods in September 2024, necessitated a significant drive to deliver food aid. Given that our partner communities in Nepal are situated in highly agricultural areas, such events have substantial impacts on crop yields. This underscores the need to extend support beyond financial contributions by equipping farmers with tools and strategies to enhance agricultural productivity.

The shared aim of academic excellence between both Birkdale and its partner schools in Nepal, the Peace Garden School, Noble School in Kathmandu and Durga school in Lumbini, provide the basis for delivering the training and enabling accurate data collection strategies.  Therefore, this project will harness Birkdale School’s high levels of academic excellence, to share and collaborate with the Nepalese counterparts, for the future continuous delivery of the proposed geosciences project.

बिर्कडेल विद्यालय, शेफिल्ड, ले विगत २५ वर्षदेखि नेपालका समुदायहरूसँग दीर्घकालीन र निरन्तर साझेदारीमा प्रतिबद्धता देखाएको छ। यस सहकार्यले बिर्कडेल समुदाय र संलग्न नेपाली साझेदारहरूका लागि आपसी फाइदाहरू सिर्जना गरेको छ। यस अवधिमा, यो पहल प्रारम्भिक विद्यालय अभियानबाट पूर्ण रूपमा क्रियाशील च्यारिटीमा रूपान्तरण भएको छ। यो च्यारिटी, RNV नेपाल, अहिले दुई वार्षिक भ्रमणहरूसँग समानान्तर रूपमा काम गर्दैछ: एक बिर्कडेल विद्यालयद्वारा नेतृत्व गरिएको र अर्को RNV नेपाल समुदायका सदस्यहरूको समावेश गरेको।

यस अवधिमा, नेपालले विनाशकारी प्राकृतिक विपद् भोगेको छ, जसले विद्यालय र च्यारिटीलाई राहत पठाउन प्रेरित गरेको छ। २०१५ को भूकम्पले पुनर्निर्माणका लागि उल्लेखनीय प्रतिक्रिया उत्पन्न गरेको थियो, यद्यपि, सेप्टेम्बर २०२४ मा भएको बाढीले खाद्यान्न राहत वितरणको लागि महत्वपूर्ण प्रयासको आवश्यकता पारेको थियो। हाम्रो साझेदार समुदायहरू नेपालका अत्यधिक कृषि क्षेत्रहरूमा स्थित छन्, त्यसैले यस्ता घटनाहरूले बाली उत्पादनमा ठूलो प्रभाव पार्छ। यसले वित्तीय योगदानभन्दा बाहेक किसानहरूलाई कृषि उत्पादनशीलता वृद्धि गर्नका लागि उपकरण र रणनीतिहरूको साथ समर्थन गर्ने आवश्यकता औंल्याउँछ।

Academic Excellence - Furthering the established routine of sharing academic links between partner schools and increasing engagement for all students in valid scientific research. The academic planning and delivery will be, in the first instance, led by Birkdale teachers but then continued over an annual cycle by relevant teachers at the Nepalese schools.  

Selected students, with an interest in scientific data collection and analysis, will actively participate in routine scientific fieldwork.  Offering hands-on opportunities to conduct exploratory studies, leading to a greater understanding, on behalf of the students, of the importance of accurate and reliable data collection; while also imparting knowledge about effective soil management practices that can benefit the rural community.

Data Collection - The primary focus of the data collection initiative is to support farmers in improving crop yields by providing accessible, actionable insights. Data collection will involve quarterly sampling of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) levels in soil samples from targeted land regions (participatory farmers) surrounding Durga School and Peace Garden School.

Collaboration with the National Soil Sample Research Centre (NARC) will enhance the precision and accuracy of data collected in these regions and enable farmers to use the data in conjunction with recommended soils nutrition and fertilisation levels. Integrating this data into NARC’s systems will facilitate region-specific insights, in accordance with the Nepalese Soil Science Research department.

शैक्षिक उत्कृष्टता – साझेदार विद्यालयहरू बीच शैक्षिक कड़ी साझा गर्ने स्थापित दिनचर्यालाई अगाडि बढाउनु र सबै विद्यार्थीहरूलाई वैध वैज्ञानिक अनुसन्धानमा समावेश गर्नको लागि संलग्नता बढाउनु। शैक्षिक योजना र कार्यान्वयन पहिलो चरणमा बिर्कडेलका शिक्षकहरूले नेतृत्व गर्नेछन्, र त्यसपछि वार्षिक चक्रमा नेपालका विद्यालयहरूको सम्बन्धित शिक्षकहरूले यसलाई निरन्तरता दिनेछन्।

विज्ञान डेटा सङ्कलन र विश्लेषणमा चासो राख्ने चयनित विद्यार्थीहरूले नियमित वैज्ञानिक फिल्डवर्कमा सक्रिय रूपमा सहभागी हुनेछन्। अन्वेषणात्मक अध्ययन गर्ने हातको अवसरहरू प्रदान गर्दै, यसले विद्यार्थीहरूलाई सटीक र विश्वासनीय डेटा सङ्कलनको महत्त्व बुझ्नमा मद्दत पुर्याउनेछ; साथै ग्रामीण समुदायको लाभको लागि प्रभावकारी माटो व्यवस्थापन अभ्यासहरूका बारेमा ज्ञान प्रदान गर्नेछ।

डेटा सङ्कलन – डेटा सङ्कलन पहलको प्राथमिक ध्यान किसानहरूको बाली उत्पादन सुधार गर्न मद्दत गर्ने, जसका लागि पहुँचयोग्य र कार्यान्वयन योग्य जानकारी उपलब्ध गराउने हो। डेटा सङ्कलनले दुर्गा विद्यालय र शान्ति गार्डेन विद्यालय वरपरका लक्षित भेगहरू (सहभागी किसानहरू) बाट माटो नमूनाहरूको त्रैमासिक नाइट्रोजन, फस्फोरस र पोटासियम (NPK) स्तरहरूको नमूना संकलन समावेश गर्नेछ।

राष्ट्रिय माटो नमूना अनुसन्धान केन्द्र (NARC) सँगको सहकार्यले यी क्षेत्रहरूमा सङ्कलित डेटा को सटीकता र ठीकतालाई सुधार्नेछ र किसानहरूलाई डेटा प्रयोग गर्न सक्षम बनाउनेछ, सँगसँगै सिफारिश गरिएका माटो पोषण र मल स्तरहरूको आधारमा। यस डेटा लाई NARC को प्रणालीमा एकीकृत गर्नेले नेपालका माटो विज्ञान अनुसन्धान विभागको अनुसार क्षेत्र-विशेष दृष्टिकोणलाई सञ्जाल गर्नेछ।
