How to identify a tree Ohio DNR Division of Forestery
Leaves are one of the quickest ways to determine what type of tree you have.
All of Ohio’s trees can be placed into one of three categories for leaf arrangement:
- 1. Alternate (most trees found in Ohio): arrangement of leaves on a stem or twig in which the leaves emerge from the stem one at a time.
- 2. Opposite: Leaves emerge from the stem in opposing pairs EXAMPLES: Maple, Ash, Dogwood, Buckeye (MADBuck, for short)
- 3. Whorled: leaves radiate from a single point and surround or wrap around the stem, always three or more. EXAMPLE: Catalpa
- Shape of the Leaf
- Is it a tree with needles (conifer) or does it have leaves?
- How many needles are grouped together (bunched) where they attach to the stem?
- Is it a single leaf or are there leaflets that join together on one stem (compound)?
- Does the leaf curve in between the veins (lobed) or not?
- Are the tips of the leaf or lobes pointed or rounded?
- Is the edge of the leaf smooth or jagged?
