The Chemistry Outreach Program's mission is to ignite curiosity and interest in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) within our community. By promoting and educating in these fields, we are inspiring the next generation of innovators and problem solvers in our local K-12 schools and community groups.
Volunteering with ChOP is a rewarding experience. Our members and volunteers (students, faculty, and staff) play a significant role in ensuring we meet our goals and make a difference. They gain valuable experience and an opportunity to contribute to the community.
Our outreach takes on three different formats:
School Visits—We bring the excitement of STEAM to life with our hands-on educative activities. We visit different K-12 schools in the Binghamton area and its environs, engaging different grade groups in these highly interactive experiences.
Partnership with ACS in CCEW & NCW activities—During Chemist Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW) and National Chemistry Week (NCW), we partner with the American Chemical Society (ACS) to coordinate and host the Illustrated Poem Contest for K-12 students in the local area. The winning entries at the local level are entered into a National contest held by the ACS.
Go-Green Institute Summer Camp—This is an annual two-week summer camp for 4-6 grade students from local elementary and middle schools. In this camp, students are engaged in explorative sustainability-themed research. They interact with all aspects of research work, from formulating a hypothesis to presenting results.
