Participant Preparation

It is the responsibility of each participant to ensure that they have access to the campus network before the start of the program. There have been many recent changes to the campus wireless and network access, both of which are essential for all of the DHRI's sessions. Additionally, many of us have not been on campus regularly, so our machines will require updates to connect to the university system. These updates may require a long period of time to implement and should be carried out before the start of the institute.

All participants are asked to come to campus before August 9, to check that they have access to the wireless network and their Binghamton University Google accounts. Any problems with wireless access or two-factor authentication should be directed to ITS before the start of the institute.

Each participant should bring the following to each session:

  • A laptop, fully charged

  • A charger, please note that some of the applications that we are using will draw on considerable battery power. All participants should have their chargers available during the sessions, even if they expect that a full charge will last through the day.

  • A mobile device, configured for two-factor authentication, according to ITS guidelines

  • Adaptors, such as for the HDMI connection to the classroom monitors (particularly for Mac users)

Details are provided below.

Laptops

All participants are strongly encouraged to use their own laptops for DHRI sessions so that they can continue to use the software and platforms that were introduced after the conclusion of the DHRI. In cases where this is not possible, a loaner may be made available, but it may not be able to offer full functionality to the user, especially if the user has not completed the campus two-factor authentication process.

Wireless Access

Binghamton University now uses the eduroam wireless network. If you are not connected to eduroam or have changed your password, you will need to reconfigure your devices for access. Use the JoinNow tool to reconfigure each device: https://www.binghamton.edu/its/about/organization/operations-and-infrastructure/networking/wifi.html

Two-Factor Authentication

Binghamton University now requires that all accounts use two-factor authentication (2FA) for network access. If you have not yet activated two-factor authentication, you must to do so before the start of the DHRI. Please note that this will require that you have access to a mobile device and that you install an authenticating application on it.

Here are the directions for enrolling in 2FA: https://www.binghamton.edu/its/two-fa/index.html

PLEASE BRING YOUR MOBILE DEVICE TO EACH DAY'S SESSIONS! You will need it to log into your accounts and to gain access to certain documents, folders, and files. You should also have access to a record of your updated passwords as you may need them to gain access to one of the computers or machines that are installed in the classroom space. In those cases, passwords that are saved on your own machine can not be relied upon.

Supplies and Hardware

LNG 208 is divided into multiple work stations. Each participant will be asked to join a team at a work station, which is equipped with a charging panel. Each participant should bring a charger. Chargers will not be provided. Please note that some of the applications that we are using will draw on considerable battery power. All participants should have their chargers available during the sessions, even if they expect that a full charge will last through the day.

Each station also allows for direct connection to a large monitor, either through the wireless Solstice system (which requires that one log in first and install an app) or through an HDMI connection. Mac users who wish to take advantage of the HDMI connection must bring their own adaptors. HDMI cords will be available.
