The Coral Island
William Golding's Lord of the Flies bears a striking resemblance to another story by R. M. Ballantyne in 1858 called The Coral Island. If you have read both, you may better understand Golding's purpose in writing Lord of the Flies, which was written approximately one hundred years after The Coral Island.
What does this have to do with IEFA, you ask? Well, I hope you will be able to tell me. Included below are Chapters 19 and 20 from Ballantyne's book. As you read, analyze how natives are portrayed in Ballantyne's book. If you have read Lord of the Flies, compare the "savages" in Ballantyne's book to the "savages" the English boys become by the end of the novel. We will discuss the significance of both and their ties to IEFA in class.
