Playing a string instrument can be difficult. The task can be made easier or more challenging depending on the quality of the instrument. It is impossible to get a good sound out of a poor quality instrument. Would you want to put time and effort into an instrument if you knew that no matter how hard you worked, it wasn't going to sound any better? A good quality instrument will grow and develop with the student as his or her skill grows and develops.
DO NOT order an instrument online before talking to Ms. Dalbey or another qualified music teacher. It is very tempting to do a quick internet search and find a seemingly good instrument for a reasonable price with all the bells and whistles, but don't! While there are some reputable online brands that sell decent instruments, most have not been set up properly. A good rule of thumb is to stay away from instruments that are not wood color. While it is tempting to buy a beautifully painted purple or blue instrument, these instruments are typically not playable and are not a good choice for a student who is already facing the challenge of learning to play.
DO go to one of our 3 amazing music stores in Billings. They have wonderful people who can help you decide what the best route is for obtaining an instrument.
DO call or email Ms. Dalbey. She can give you all the information you need to obtain an instrument.
DO NOT worry if you can't afford an instrument. At School District 2, we want everyone to be able to try an instrument. If finances are an issue, please do not let that get in the way. We can help! Please call or email Ms. Dalbey or anyone from the district music department and we will point you in the right direction.
