12th Grade ELA

Fools Crow

Required IEFA reading in semester one may include Fools Crow by James Welch, which is supported by a model teaching unit. The Marias Massacre and events which led up to it provide students with historical context for he novel and can be taught through Blood on the Marias, a series of transcribed primary source documents and lesson plans developed by the Montana Historical Society.  We also have a set of extra and facsimile primary sources on the Marias Massacre for interested teachers.

Teachers can also contact the Indian Education Office for a set of 12 historical photograph posters of Blackfeet, or use this powerpoint. Some images are better quality than others, but students will have a visual reference for Blackfeet people, lodges, and medicine bundles in the late 19th century.

The Round House

The Round House by Louise Erdrich was added to the BPS IEFA selections for 12th grade in 2017. Suggestions for discussion cultural concepts and infusing IEFA Essential Understandings are offered in the document below. The Powerpoint also includes images and embedded film clips that help students visualize and understand cultural elements, such as the sweat lodge, powwow and Métis fiddle music.
