Nakoda

Nakotan Siouan language of the Northern Plains is spoken on the Fort Peck and Fort Belknap reservations in Montana. The name Assiniboine comes from Anishinaabe (Ojibwe)  from the term Asiniibwaan, meaning "Stone Boilers". The reason they were called this was that Assiniboine people used heated stones to boil their food. In Canada, Assiniboine people are known as Stoney Indians, while they called themselves Nakota or Nakoda, meaning "allies".
