What is an ITIN number?
The Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. This is issued by the IRS for those people who are not eligible to obtain a social security number.
The ITIN number is used for people to comply with the tax laws of the United States, in an efficient and fast manner without taking into account immigration status.

Do I need an ITIN?
You must obtain an ITIN if:
You do not have a Social Security Number or are not eligible to obtain one, and you are required to provide a federal tax identification number, or file a federal tax return.
If you are in one of the following categories:
Nonresident alien required to file a U.S. tax return.
US resident alien (based on days present in the US) filing a US tax return.
Dependent or spouse of a citizen/resident alien of the United States.
Dependent or spouse of a non-resident foreigner who has a visa.
Nonresident alien claiming a benefit from a tax treaty.
Nonresident alien student, professor, or researcher who files a U.S. tax return or claims an exception.
If so, then you have to apply for an ITIN.
