Hello! Welcome to the 2019 volleyball season!
Every year brings in a fresh crew, excitement, and memories that last a lifetime. I couldn't ask for a more enthusiastic and caring staff to work with. The girls in our program walk out of the gym with experiences and memories that last a lifetime!
This year will be my 19th year teaching middle school math and coaching in Big Lake. I get the unique opportunity to watch our volleyball players grow up in the program. I wouldn't trade this job for the world! I started out coaching two years of 9th grade volleyball under Brad Schnitzler, taking over the varsity coaching position when he retired. Prior to Big Lake, I coached 10th grade volleyball for two years at Shanley High school in Fargo, ND (during my college years). I also have over 20 years of JO coaching experience at all levels from 13's - 18's. I am so thankful for my husband, Jeff, who allows me to continue to coach a sport I am so passionate about. We have two children, Mason (13 years), and Rachel (9 years).
My coaching history goes back to 1993 when I was still in high school (wow that seems like a long time ago!). Being a three sport high school athlete, I was involved in helping in all of the youth programs in our high school. I had the opportunity to coach my brothers 8th grade boys basketball team. It was one of the best and most rewarding experiences. It was at that time I decided to forego playing college sports and focus on the teaching aspect of athletics. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made! The relationships with players and coaching networks I have developed have been second to none. My philosophy continues to change with experience. I firmly believe that a growth mindset, hard work, and willingness to learn will develop successful habits for a lifetime of success.
Greetings from Coach Spanier
I will be entering my 19th year of teaching here at Big Lake and my 22nd year in education (3 years at Dawson-Boyd). I teach Social Studies at the High School. I have spent many years coaching a variety of sports including volleyball, wrestling, and baseball.
Coaching volleyball became a reality many years ago when Coach Brust needed somebody to fill a B squad position. How little did I know that this job would become such a unique opportunity. Along the way, my family has been blessed with some many caring individuals that have made coaching so enjoyable.
Hard work, dedication, attitude, and commitment are key components to success.
Hello All!
The 2019 school year will begin my 5th year coaching here at Big Lake. I work in the high school as a Biology teacher, so I get to know the girls on the court and in the classroom, which is a fun dynamic. I grew up in STMA and developed an attitude of hard work and integrity from my years playing volleyball, hockey, and track there. I believe in pure athleticism and a growth mindset being the root of all success. If we put in the work, great things will happen to us.
I graduated from STMA in 2009, after my volleyball team took 3rd place in state. Then I went on to play intramural volleyball, while doing track and field at Concordia College. After graduating in 2013, my love for the sport never faded. Getting to share my knowledge of volleyball and being successful in high school with these girls is a passion of mine.
Hard work. Integrity. Attitude. Walk in with these personality traits, and we will have a great season!
