About Your Advisor

I'm Scott Simmonds, CPCU, ARM. My insurance consulting practice was founded in 2000 on the idea that unbiased insurance advice and information is important to insurance buyers.

I am someone you can call when you have insurance and risk management problems and questions – without the concern that I’m selling something. Think of me as the insurance expert who does not sell insurance.

  • I don’t ever sell insurance.
  • I don’t accept fees, commissions, or gifts from agents and insurers.
  • My advice is not tainted by the entanglements of bonuses or reward payments.
  • My insurance and risk management advice is unbiased.

My insurance clients insist on my independent counsel. I regularly turn down offers of fee-sharing and commissions. When an insurance agent sends me a gift (which happens surprisingly often), I always send it back. (I was once sent a dozen lobsters by an insurance agent. Those went to a local fire department for them to have a feast. Couldn't let the lobsters go to waste.) I don’t even let insurance agents buy me lunch. (I do drink their coffee when I visit their offices – it usually isn’t very good coffee though.)

I guess I was born to be in the insurance business. My dad was an insurance agent in New Hampshire when I was a baby. He then joined an insurance company, and we bounced about the East Coast while I was in school – Massachusetts, Ohio, Georgia, back to Massachusetts. The summer between my freshman and sophomore year in college, I decided it was time to get a job in business. My dad suggested I try an insurance agency. I got a job as an auto claims clerk, and the rest is history. I worked at five different insurance agencies before starting my unbiased insurance consulting practice.

In 2000, I decided that there was a need for an insurance expert who did not sell insurance. I left my job at a small insurance agency, and was allowed by my wife to take over the corner of a basement bedroom. As the business grew so did my office – from a corner, to half the bedroom, to taking over the family room. We then built a new house with a large office and a separate “office” entrance – a door that not once was entered by a client.

I have been called the largest single insurance buyer in the country. Several years ago I totaled it up – I help my clients with about $50,000,000 in premiums each year.

My formal education includes a degree from Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, the Certified Insurance Counselor designation from the Society of CIC, and the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter designation conferred by the American Institute for CPCU. I earned the Insurance Institute of America’s Associate in Risk Management designation in 2005. In 2007 I was awarded the Certified Management Consultant designation by the Institute of Management Consultants, USA. My insurance work has involved companies in a wide range of industries. I have handled insurance and risk management issues for public and private corporations, including many with international operations. My work includes nonprofits, manufacturers, banks, hotels, property managers, municipalities, and schools.

In 2002, I was accepted as a member of the Society for Advancement of Consulting, an organization made up of only the top 1% of consultants nationwide. In 2004, I was granted “board approved” status, putting me in the top 10% of the top 1% of consultants.

My writing and comments have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Fortune, Money, Inc. Magazine, Smart Money Magazine, the New York Times, Boston Globe, Investors Business Daily, Kiplinger’s, the Los Angeles Times, and countless trade publications.

I make my home in Mississippi – while keeping strong ties to Maine. I enjoy CrossFit and the shooting sports. I also like reading, playing with our dogs, and bird watching. My wife and I have five kids and five grandchildren. I’m a past president of the trade association, Maine Association Of Professional Consultants, and of the Biddeford/Saco Rotary Club.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included for your fee?

The fee is for the phone conversation on the topic of interest to you. The basic consultation is up to 30 minutes long. You have my brain for those 1,800 seconds. We can talk about any insurance issue you like. My expertise is commercial and personal insurance (also known as property and casualty insurance). I have broad knowledge of life, disability, health and long-term care insurance. You pay the fee, we set a time for the call, you call me, we talk.

How much is your fee?

My fee for the 30-minute call is $300 prepaid. If we find that the issues require deeper conversations we can figure that out after the initial call.

What if we want to talk with you again?

Just reach out and request another call. I often offer longer term engagements too.

How soon can we get on the phone with you after we pay your fee?

Usually the same day. In some cases it might be the next day. We work hard to get to each of our clients within 24-hours of the payment of the fee.

After the phone consultation can we email you on the same topic?

Yes, for an additional fee.

If I'm not happy with the advice you give me can I get a refund?

First, nobody has ever requested a refund in the twenty years I have been providing insurance consulting services. I have worked with hundreds of businesses and individuals with no issues. You will get the best of my thinking on the issues you raise. You might not like what we have to say. I will always shoot straight and do my best to help you. Once you pay us the fee it will not be returned to you for any reason, save if we are unable to schedule a call due to issues on our side.
