Ceramics1&2 0.5 Credit: Semester

Prerequisite: None

Would you like to learn how to use the pottery wheel to create forms such as vases, cups, bowls or plates? Students in Ceramics 1 will learn to use the potter's wheel to create simple forms such as bowls, mugs, and vases. Students will learn to refine their skills to create complex forms, such as a teapot. Students will learn the process of recycling clay with a pug mill as well as the process of firing in a kiln. Students will also learn the process of glazing their pieces with low and high fire glazes. Students will incorporate the elements and principles of art to create aesthetically pleasing 3D ceramic pieces. Ceramics 1 has no prerequisite, but is a prerequisite to Ceramics 2.

Recommended with a Grade of C or better in Ceramics 1

Would you like to learn how to throw more advanced forms on the wheel such as a large cookie jar with a lid, teapot with matching tea cups or nesting mixing bowls? In Ceramics 2 students will learn to throw more refined pieces on the wheel and begin to experiment with advanced glazing techniques. Students will be involved in the kiln firing process of loading and unloading kilns and mixing glazes. Students will study art history, contemporary artists and art movements and incorporate the elements and principles of art to create aesthetically pleasing 3D ceramic forms and sculptures.
