Welcome, teachers and parents of our school community! This guide is designed to provide you with reliable resources and information on how trauma, ACES, Co-Regulation, Self-Regulation, and Neuroplasticity impact our students, helping us cultivate a truly trauma-sensitive school environment.
Adverse Childhood Experiences
In a 1996 Study by Kaiser Permanente and the CDC. Asked over 17,000 participants about 10 possible ACEs and then followed their long-term health outcomes
Study showed that increased ACE scores correlated with negative health outcomes such as anxiety and depression, chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer, a higher likelihood to engage in risky behavior, and lower lifetime earnings.
Also showed prevalence of ACEs: nearly 2 in 3 people have experienced at least 1 ACE, and about 1 in 5 have experienced 3+ ACEs
These are just the original 10 ACEs identified in the study. There are lots of other things that are adverse childhood experiences, like having an absent parent, being placed in foster care, frequent moves, and extreme poverty

Understanding Neuroplasticity:
The lifelong ability to rewire and build new pathways in our brains!
The "use it or lose it" principle suggests that the body and brain will weaken or lose function in areas that are not actively used. This applies to both physical fitness and cognitive abilities.
It starts with being aware of our thoughts.
Then how our thoughts make us feel in our bodies.
Mindfulness practice slows us down and calms us so we can pay attention to these thoughts, and so we can reach the thinking part of the brain.
To rewire, we must be regulated and aware of our thinking. This video explains that the thinking you feed into is the mindsets that grow and hardwire pathways!
Self-Care is Essential to Support Neuroplasticity and a Growth Mindset!
