Math Fun at Home!

Math can easily be incorporated into daily routines. Games can be played with items you already have around the house. No need to buy expensive video or board games and computer apps!

Grocery Store Math. Ask your child to help you get a certain amount of grocery items. For example: "Could you please add 2 cans of corn and 3 cans of carrots to the cart." "Let's counts all our items as we put them on the conveyor belt. How many items all together?"

Counting in the Car. As you are driving have your child count how many they see of a specific item of your choice (stop signs, street lights, New Hampshire license plates, red cars...). You can even have your child keep a tally of each item.

Play Family Games such as Uno, Candyland, Go Fish with number cards, and BINGO.

Play Collect 10. You need one die (or two dice) and pennies (or other small objects). Players take turns rolling the die and collecting pennies. The first person to collect 10 wins. Variations: winner takes all or use two dice and play until someone collects twenty pennies.

Real Life Story Problems. Have your child help you solve math problems. For example: "There are five people in our family, and Aunt Sally, Uncle Tom, and Jack are coming for dinner. How many plates (chairs, forks...) will we need?"

Display a Calendar in a place your child can easily access. Put your child in charge of keeping track of special days. For example: "How many more days until Jack's birthday party?"

Sing Math Songs such as Five Little Monkeys and One, Two, Buckle My Shoe.
