Burning Sky
By Madeline Duncan-Book
Evening fell,
Elena, creeping out of her bed,
Sneaks out of the window,
Onto the roof.
Bright lights burn in the sky.
Nobody looks at the sky,
I must be the only one.
Overcome with drowsiness,
Eyelids heavy,
There on the roof,
She falls deep into sleep.
Meanwhile, across town,
David creeps into his backyard,
To stare at the stars.
The glowing moon dances across the sky.
Nobody looks at the sky,
I must be the only one.
Overcome with drowsiness,
Eyelids heavy,
There in the backyard,
he falls deep into sleep.
Morning comes.
David’s mother wakes him up,
“It’s time to go”.
David helps load the rest of the big brown boxes into the truck.
Driving through town,
David holds in his tears.
Suddenly,
They arrive.
David stares at the big yellow house.
Holding his mother’s hand,
Follows her into the house.
The house is empty.
Strong men
fill the empty house with the boxes from the truck.
The long day has ended.
As night falls once more,
David creeps out of the door.
To his new backyard,
But the backyard is too covered with trees,
The stars were blocked from sight.
An idea sparks in his mind,
He chooses a tree
and carefully climbs until he finds the perfect branch.
He perches on the branch.
To his surprise,
He finds that he can see over the brown fence,
Over and to the big blue house.
On the roof, a girl sits,
Staring back at him.
While Elena sees,
A boy in the trees.
They stare and stare,
For what feels like hours.
Until their parents catch them and call them inside.
Evening falls once more,
He creeps out the door.
Climbing up the tree,
He watches the girl.
Every night,
They stare in fascination.
Somebody watches the stars, too.
In a world where he could not feel less alone,
There she is.
One night,
Elena snuck out onto the roof once more,
But the boy was not there.
Sadness struck through her,
In the break in their routine.
There she sat for the rest of the night,
Staring at the moon,
Alone.
The next night,
Once the sun set,
She rushed to the roof.
But, the boy was not there,
For once,
She went back inside.
The next morning,
Elena finally worked up the courage.
She walked next door,
Hesitated,
And knocked on the door.
A woman answered,
Elena asked her about her son.
“David is in the hospital.”
“He fell climbing a tree in the dark.”
A gut-wrenching feeling of guilt and despair struck Elena.
Without saying a word,
She rushed home.
David,
The one person in the world,
That Elena understood.
Elena pleaded with her father,
Pleaded until he drove her to the hospital.
She swung open the heavy door to the hospital room.
There she saw David,
Bandaged and bruised.
She rushed to his side,
Tears in her eyes,
She didn’t say a word.
Later that night,
Back on the roof,
She stared at the tree,
Where David once sat.
Every night,
She waited,
But he never came.
Until one night,
As Elina waited as usual,
She saw David.
This time,
He climbed out of a small window,
And onto the roof.
As Elena saw David,
She smiled more prominently than ever before.
In that moment,
David thought that her smile burned brighter than the stars.
The Hoop Looms Large
By Mason Bral
The first time I played
With a basketball, I was ten,
Excited and bouncing
With the ball in my hands.
Summer. Sun shining
On the court, my sneakers
Squeaking on the ground,
As I dribbled toward
The hoop, the one with
The net that swayed gently
In the breeze, in any weather.
A bird chirped at me, until
My friend came out smiling,
Face bright with joy. I grinned,
Passed the ball, and we ran
Down the court, past
The old swings and a line
Of tall trees,
Until we were panting
Before the hoop. We
Shot the ball, the sound
Of it swishing through the net
Echoing in the air.
I turned to my friend,
Eyes shining with excitement,
And asked if he wanted to play again -
Light in his eyes, a smile
Starting at the corners
Of his mouth. I held
The ball in my hands,
And when he nodded,
I didn't say anything.
I dribbled the ball, then passed it,
And we played quietly on
The court. When I looked up,
The sun's rays met mine,
And held them, knowing
Very well, what it was all
About.
Outside,
A few cars driving past,
Birds singing like old
Friends between the trees.
I took my friend's hand
In mine for a moment,
Then, it released it to let
He shoots the ball.
I held my basketball.
That was so bright against
The blue of the sky
That, from some distance,
Someone might have thought
I was holding the sun in my hands.
Colors that Dance in the Rain
By Ava Plaxen
On a drizzly afternoon,
I slipped out with a grin,
The world wrapped in gray,
Nature’s soft lullaby, a whispering hum.
Clouds puffed like cotton,
The skies filled with dreams,
In puddles, reflections shimmered,
Where sunlight reached the streams.
With a crayon clasped tight,
I darted to the yard,
Fingers itching to draw,
A world painted bold.
As the rain began to retreat,
A hush fell, soft and sweet,
Then, a flicker,
A bridge from the heavens, miraculous and true.
Oh, the colors, A vibrant arc,
A touch of joy sprung from my heart,
I dashed to my sister, laughter in mind,
“Look, A rainbow. Come see how it glows.”
Her eyes sparkled, mirroring the skies,
In that magical moment, time seemed to rise.
We ran through the garden, where flowers swayed,
Each petal of a glorious day,
The scent of wet earth, the thrill of the chase,
With rainbows above, joy bubbled in space.
But as the light began fading, the colors slipped away,
A fading reminder of the magic at play.
Yet, in my pocket, I clasped a small stone,
A promise that we were not alone.
For rainbows may vanish, but in hearts, they remain,
A touch of colors that dance in the rain.
A symbol of hope, of dreams taking flight,
In every drop of rain lies the promise of light.
The Layup
by Aiden B
The first time I walked
Onto the court
I was nervous
But after
I felt comfortable
And I got into
A rhythm
I would not miss
A single shot
A single layup
I was the star
Of the show
I ran the offense
And helped the
Defense I
Started fast breaks
For my teammates
They scored too
We were all happy
And we won
By 55 points
I had 30 points.
On The Court
By Jason Chadorchi
In a gym so bright and wide,
A basketball team, side to side.
Players dribble, pass, and shoot,
In sneakers that squeak and definitely no boots .
The crowd cheers loud, the clock ticks down,
Sweat and effort, no time to drown.
A three-point shot, it goes so high,
Swish! It lands,
the crowds cry.
Teamwork, hustle, every play,
Chasing dreams in their own way.
The final buzzer, the game is done,
Victory smiles, for everyone.
His Hand in Mine
By Kylie Esmaeilzadeh
It was a crisp autumn morning,
When I first walked through the park.
A warm coffee in one hand,
And the other was buried in my pocket.
The leaves crunched beneath my feet,
A mix of gold and brown,
Their earthy scent mingling with the cool air,
Whispering secrets of the season.
I saw him sitting on the park's bench,
His eyes reflecting the glistening pond,
With a book resting on his lap,
As the pages fluttered through the wind.
He offered me a handful of daisies,
Their petals soft and pure,
A simple gesture, yet a silent promise,
In the fading light of day.
He smiled, his fingers meeting mine,
A warmth spreading through the cold.
And in that moment, the daisies became a symbol,
Something unspoken, yet understood.
The Petite Terrier
By Audrey Rosenfeld
The petite terrier pranced through the grainy sand carelessly;
Unknowingly leading the people of the Navajo tribe into the heat.
The people did not know where they were headed.
Still, they laid all of their trust in the animal.
The dog led the three women farther into the barren desert,
Tiny grains of sand brush the women's garments.
The woman had run away from their husbands,
their lives,
their children.
They had not a clue where they were headed,
All they knew was away from where they came.
The women left behind everything they knew.
They needed direction from a more holy being,
They needed a guide, a god, or an idol.
Yet a dog they chose to follow.
Simile Poems
Little Me
By Joey Boutboul
I want to be
Like a big dragon
Like a dragon that everyone's afraid of
But I’m small
One day, I’ll grow
Out of my tiny, delicate skin
I’ll roar with a grin
Like the scary dragon, I could've been.
Winds of Dreams
By Yeva Bystrytska
I want to be,
Like the wind that
Plays freely with the leaves.
I want to be,
Like the sun that
Shines brightly, warming the world.
But
Like a star,
I may seem far away,
Not always visible.
One day I will...
Go beyond,
Like a bird flying to a distant land,
Where dreams come true.
A Way to Change with Stars and Rain
By Shaylin Javaheri
I want to be
Like the shooting stars,
Like the rain coming down from the sky,
But I will always be me.
One day, I’ll change.
Out of the blue.
I’ll find a way to change.
Like how the rain stops raining.
I Will Ripple
By Benjamin Lalezari
I want to be
Like the big sea,
Like the loud waves that crash to the ground,
But I’m me.
One day,
I’ll ripple like the waves with a massive sound
Out in the deep, dark sea
I’ll be fast but still slow
Like a snowboard in the snow.
Watch Me Fly
By Georgia Butler
I want to be
Like a warm, glowing sunset,
Like a flowing palm tree,
But the sun goes down, and palm trees fall.
One day, I’ll fly
Out in the sky.
I’ll glow and fly with the warm breeze in the sun
Like a palm tree that won’t fall.
Swimming Through Life Gracefully
By Celine Choe
I want to be
Like a star, shining bright for everyone to see
Like a fish, swimming gracefully
But I’m me.
One day, I’ll be light and carefree
A balloon rising higher and higher
I’ll be who I want to be
But for now, I’m just me.
Free Like the Wind
By Madeline Duncan-Book
I want to be
Like the roaring wind,
Like the calming breeze,
But I can’t.
One day I’ll go
Out in the world.
I’ll be free
Like the roaring wind and the calming breeze.
Bursting Out
By Maya Kohanim
I want to be
Like the sun in the dawn,
Like the rain in the storm,
But I’m me.
One day I’ll burst,
Out of my cocoon.
I’ll paint the world
Like a rainbow's bloom.
Pantoum Poems
The Court's Symphony
By Mason Bral
The ball glides through the air with grace,
Echoes of sneakers on the floor,
A swift pass, a determined chase,
The crowd erupts with a mighty roar.
Echoes of sneakers on the floor,
A rhythm that never seems to cease,
The crowd erupts with a mighty roar,
In this game, we find our peace.
A rhythm that never seems to cease,
A swift pass, a determined chase,
In this game, we find our peace,
The ball glides through the air with grace.
A swift pass, a determined chase,
The ball glides through the air with grace,
In this game, we find our peace,
Echoes of sneakers on the floor.
In Her Eyes a Gentle Light
By Maya Kohanim
In her eyes a gentle light,
Guiding me through the darkest nights.
Her hands always there to hold,
In her warmth, I find my gold.
Guiding me through the darkest nights,
Her voice is a soothing melody.
In her warmth, I find my gold.
She whispers love and sets me free.
Her voice is a soothing melody.
A heart so big it overflows.
She whispers love and sets me free.
In her embrace, my love grows.
In her eyes a gentle light,
A heart so big it overflows
Her hands always there to hold,
In her embrace, my love grows.
Ronaldo Dancing on the Field
By Diego Rodriguz Alfonso
Dancing on the field,
With a grace that defies the night.
A beacon where the crowd can feel,
Energizing every flight.
With a grace that defies the night,
His spirit fuels a burning drive.
Energizing every flight,
In the game, he comes alive.
His spirit fuels a burning drive,
A beacon where the crowd can feel,
In the game, he comes alive,
Dancing on the field,
Dancing on the field,
A beacon where the crowd can feel,
A spirit that ignites the drive,
Energizing every flight.
Winter Walk
By Yeva Bystrytska
The frost bites gently at my cheeks,
The streets are quiet, bathed in snow.
Each step, a crunch of icy streaks,
A world transformed, with a soft glow.
The streets are quiet, bathed in snow,
A sense of peace begins to grow.
A world transformed, with a soft glow,
As winter’s whispers start to show.
A sense of peace begins to grow,
Each step, a crunch of icy streaks.
As winter’s whispers start to show,
The frost bites gently at my cheeks.
My Dad, the Best Dad
By Celine Choe
Working hard every day,
Helping me become a better person,
Caring for his family,
Sacrificing energy to give us more
Helping me become a better person,
Filled with love for family and friends,
Sacrificing energy to give us more,
Entertaining us with silly jokes
Filled with love for family and friends,
Supporting us every step of the way,
Entertaining us with silly jokes,
Being the best dad
Working hard every day,
Supporting us every step of the way,
Caring for his family,
Being the best dad.
My Whole World
By Julia Massoudi
She greets the day with her warm smile
Full of love throughout the entire day
Ready to hug you whenever you need
Kind and caring with everything she does
Full of love throughout the entire day
A person you can talk to when you need
Kind and caring with everything she does
Someone to make you laugh all the time
A person you can talk to when you need
My best friend in the whole world
Someone to make you laugh all the time
Playful and fun to be with
She greets the day with her warm smile
My best friend in the whole world
Ready to hug you whenever you need
Playful and fun to be with.
Happiness Walks on All Fours
By Asher Stevens
They wait for instructions,
Ready to please their owner.
Full of excitement,
They run and play with delight
Ready to please their owner,
Always up for a delicious treat.
They run and play with delight.
The energy rushes through them
Loving everything they see,
Sharing happiness with the owner.
The energy rushes through them,
Their paws bounce on the floor as they play
They wait for instructions,
Sharing happiness with the owner.
Full of excitement,
Their paws bounce on the floor as they play.
Visually Inspired Poems
The Freedom of Youth
By Audrey Rosenfeld
Animals of color, bouncing with every step.
Red, green, blue, purple, orange, and black.
Peacocks and dogs, but pigeons and snakes
Colors of imagination blooming like a spring flower
The freedom of youth, gifting no boundaries
Yet worries of age drape the world
With freedom yet confinement
Let imagination bloom.
Moving Motion
By Timofei Guliuta
As shapes move in motion
Looks like everything is broken
Fragments dance in disarray
Whispers of havoc lead the way.
Everything twists, refusing to align
A world undone, by design
Colors form, yet softly blend
A story continuing with no end.
Faces split, and they stare
Emotions tear in the air
Shadows stretch, and light divides
An infinite world where truth resides.
In the fracture lies a spark
A beauty in the dark
Though the pieces never mend
Each broken form begins again.
A Blank Space
By Benjamin Lalezari
I see a blank canvas waiting to be painted on,
A new story waiting to be written
A planet that is the home of 8 billion people
is just a small, blue, marble
A grey, lifeless moon waiting to be a source of life
A lonely, quiet atmosphere
Drifting away from all civilization
So many things are happening
But all you can see is a blue sphere in all of space
Slowly spinning and moving around the sun
You realize, everything big is small to something else.
The Moon Looks Down At Us
By Ava Shindler
On a perfectly balanced Earth,
Billions of people who live there
Look up to the night sky and see the moon
Wondering if life is possible over there
On a round, grey planet
Most likely empty,
Look up to the night sky and see the Earth
Wondering if life is possible over there
People from millions of light years away,
Asking the same question
The only thing separating us
Is the dark galaxy filled with beautiful stars
A bland picture can tell us
Only so much
Imagine how much the moon can tell us
About how life is over there.
Lone Rock
By Aiden Wilen
A lone rock gliding in space,
A bright blue neighbor draws near,
An orb filled with life,
Has gained a new friend in its dark endeavor.
The Moon and Earth dance
Like two balls on a string,
Spinning together,
Like figure skaters on one big rink.
Forever dancing together,
Stars watching from a distance,
Two partners with a magnifying dance,
One blue and one gray.
The Enigmatic Smile
By Aiden Banafsheha
In the quiet of her gaze, a
Mystery unfolds,
A smile is so subtle, and it holds secrets.
Soft colors blend in a timeless dance,
Her eyes follow, in a curious trance.
A landscape behind, with paths that wind,
A journey unknown in the artist's mind.
Hands folded gently, in serene repose,
In the Mona Lisa, a story grows.
Calm and still, yet full of grace,
In her enigmatic smile, we find our place.
A portrait of wonder, through time it stays,
In Leonardo's art, forever we gaze.
The Night's Embrace
By Mason Bral
In the night’s embrace, the stars dance bright,
Swirling skies of blue and yellow light.
A crescent moon whispers secrets untold,
While the village below sleeps, calm and cold.
A cypress stands tall, a sentinel in the night,
Guarding dreams with its shadowy might.
Hills roll gently, under the starry sea,
A world of wonder, vast yet close to me.
Tranquil village, beneath the cosmic play,
In the night’s embrace, we find our way.
Energy and peace, in harmony they blend,
In Van Gogh’s starry night, where dreams ascend.
Picture-Perfect
By Georgia Butler
A picture-perfect painting,
Like the sun falling after a long day,
Before a cold winter’s night.
A falling pink and blue raindrop,
Spreading joy and delight.
A picture-perfect painting,
Cotton candy melted all over the sky,
And a soft breeze, moving through the trees,
To give you a sudden chill as you pass,
And the birds humming on the branches.
A picture-perfect painting,
With so much in store,
So much to reveal,
And so much to ignore.
With this picture-perfect painting,
It’s easy to see,
This picture-perfect painting,
Is filled with joy and glee.
So next time you see a picture-perfect painting,
Think of this poem; think of me.
Observe the Power
By MeWa Liao
She seems to be alone,
she seems to yearn,
she seems to reach at an unknown place,
but all that time goes to waste.
For for however far she reaches,
she shall never hold true tangibility.
Like a desire waiting to be realized,
that it was always meant to be impossible to fulfill.
Yes, like a sense so strong in oneself,
she shall push forward till she shall end.
Like a feeling so powerful,
when a bar taller than she shall emerge,
thou shalt not recoil,
but shall rise above it.
Her true destiny has been accomplished.
But her heart’s will,
shall never.
Hence the power of her name,
she was born for destruction,
known for destruction.
So correct,
she has fulfilled her destiny.
But her heart means the pure,
so she shall not stop,
she shall not try,
thou shalt accomplish.
She shall reach till the withered gray sky that cowers beneath her presence
has been engulfed.
Thou shalt not fail.
But if I may ask,
how do you know about her?
Because I am Tsunami,
and it seems as if she has finally reached a poet,
to write her accomplishment down.
Thank you,
my friend,
I shall spare you once.
The Roaring Sea
By Celine Choe
The sea is a vicious lion
Waiting for the right moment to catch its prey
The foam of its beautiful yet dangerous waves
Like claws ready to grab anything in its way
Its curves like an open mouth
Roaring and growling with ferocity
Nature can be a watery monster .
In the Middle of the Sea
By Abigail Mahboubi-Fardi
A strong wave
As strong as can be
Will wash you away
In the middle of the sea
You will end up at the shore
Confused as can be
The sailboat will break
Into little pieces
You can not see.
Tidal Forces
by Diego Rodriguez Alfonso
In the grip of a restless sea,
A wave curls, wild and free,
Mount Fuji stands, steadfast and grand,
While boats battle the ocean's hand.
Fleeting moments, lives at stake,
Nature’s fury, hearts that quake,
A dance of danger, grace, and might,
A dance of danger, grace, and might,
In the storm's embrace, fear takes flight.
Memory Poems
Yosemite
By Tom Weiser
The road was swirling just like a great long snake
A blue sky painted with bright white clouds
Giant trees reached the heavens, and as the wind sways them back and forth
A bear is walking across the road and acts like he is alone in the world
We went to a winding river spotted with big boulders
The water was as cool as the icy shores of the Antarctic
We ran around like cheetahs chasing a gazelle
We hiked up a mountain as the nature around us flourished
Up we went to the top of a boulder
We had a view like a hawk flying over a Grand Canyon
Searching and soaring as its feathers take the wind
The rocks are grand and grey with extraordinary healing powers
The trip was an adventure and a source of exploration
As we drove back home, we spotted another bear carelessly eating
bright red berries
We go down the mountain and leave nature behind for a city entirely of noise.
Tiny Paws
By Ava Plaxen
On a sunny Saturday afternoon
I raced home
To see a golden puppy
Her soft fur tickling my hands
Excited to have a new friend
A taste of excitement
Almost like cotton candy melting in my mouth
Marks of puppy energy everywhere
Joyful barks
Tiny paws danced on the wooden floor
The whole house was filled with love and laughter
I felt like I was floating
Ready to explore the world together.
Heart Full of Joy
By Timofei Guliuta
I packed my bags, heart full of joy,
Off to Florida, wild and free.
The sun shines bright, the palm trees sway,
A trip to cherish every day.
Grandma’s hugs, so warm and tight,
Grandpa’s stories late at night.
Laughter shared with cousins dear,
Filling my heart with joy
A long-lost friend, a bond so real
Reunited like we always knew.
Miles apart but close at heart,
No time or distance pulls us apart.
Florida skies, so blue and wide,
Memories made with love and pride.
Goodbyes are hard, but I’ll stand tight,
Till we meet again in golden light.
New York
By Asher Stevens
Six hours inside a cramped plane,
Is finally over.
Outside was freezing.
The flickering lights were stunning,
The skyscrapers loomed tall.
The air was full of smoke,
Hurting my lungs as I breathe.
Finally, the warm, comfortable hotel.
The room had a tan carpet floor,
Comfy bed and a huge window.
The view was amazing,
All of the buildings were covered in lights.
The horizon was jagged with buildings.
Empire State Building
By Ava Shindler
The sun was shining above me.
A tall building caught my eye.
To my astonishment,
It was the Empire State Building
As I opened the door,
I smelled a whiff of fresh air
Blowing on my face
A nice breeze from the hot sunny day
As I went higher and higher on the elevator
It was like a roller coaster
I was even higher than the clouds
I saw the hundreds of buildings
Surrounding me
I felt taller than all the little people
Who looked like a tiny dot.
Summer Bliss
By Maya Kohanim
Summer trip to the beach,
Sun shining, golden glow,
White sand, salty scent,
Ocean's sweet aroma.
Rhythmic crashing of waves,
Distant laughter,
Children building sandcastles,
It's a cool, refreshing popsicle.
Sticky but delightful,
Warm sand, gentle breeze,
Pure bliss,
Collecting seashells, splashing waves.
Joy and laughter,
Simple pleasures,
A day of family,
Summer bliss.
Quatrain Poems
Leap and Swish
By Mason Bral
On the court where dreams take flight,
Dribbling the ball beneath the bright light,
With each leap and swish, my heart beats loud,
In the game I love, I'm lost in the crowd.
Sweet Soul
By MeWa Liao
A nice sweet soul filled with hope,
a demon in disguise.
She would bungee jump as well.
A nice demon soul who'd dance.
A Timeless Song
By Aiden Wilen
In a classic car, we glide through time,
With leather seats and wheels that chime,
The engine’s roar, a timeless song,
We chase the horizon, wherever we belong.
Up High
By By Timofei Guliuta
You may ask what I wanna do
I want to do parkour
Jump, hop, swing, I’m doing everything
Climbing high, I feel pure.
Kicking to Score
By Diego Rodriguez Alfonso
Beneath the sun, the players’ race,
With every kick, we seek the score,
The cheers erupt, a lively place,
Together, we’ll strive for more!
Hearts Ablaze
By Asher Stevens
On the field, the players compete with pride
Every kick brings their dreams
Swiftly moving, their hearts are ablaze
Chasing glory, or so it seems
