The NHS Indian Star Chapter of Bremen High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. General standards for selection are established by the national office of NHS in Washington, D.C. and may be customized to meet local chapter needs. Students are selected to be members by a five-member Faculty Council which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school during the months of September and October. Students in the 11th or 12th grades are eligible for membership.

Membership Criterion and Application information

For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative GPA of 4.4 or better after four semesters for juniors or six semesters for seniors. Those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Student Activity Information Form that provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service. A history of participation in school or community service is also required. Invitations to apply for NHS membership will be mailed home in September. To evaluate a candidate’s leadership and character, the Faculty Council solicits input from the school faculty members and the Deans regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, and leadership. The responses to this faculty survey and the responses submitted by the student on the Student Activity Information Forms (the green sheet that is a part of the application) are carefully reviewed by the 5-member Faculty Council to determine membership. A majority vote of the Council is necessary for selection. Candidates will be notified regarding selection or non-selection after the Council meets in early to mid October; letters will be mailed to the students home address, as listed in the Powerschool System. Any student who is not selected has the opportunity to appeal the decision of the Faculty council. The selected candidate will become a member only after his/her participation in the Induction Ceremony. The 2018 Induction will be held in November. There will be a required rehearsal for the Induction Ceremony prior to the event; all current and incoming members must attend both the rehearsal and the ceremony.

Membership Expectations

Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection. This obligation includes regular attendance at chapter meetings held monthly at 3:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month during the school year, payment of dues, participation in the chapter service projects, complete a total of 20 hours of documented service to the community, maintain a clean disciplinary record and positive relations with their teachers.
