U.S. Department of Education Newcomer Toolkit
This is a great resource for educators working with newcomers.
A great communication tool to send messages to your parents in their first language. The great thing about this resource is that you can send a text message in English, and it sends the same message in the first language of the parent/student. Also, it does not use your personal phone number. You can access via web browser or app.
A bilingual site for educators and families of English language learners. This website has a wealth of information and is highly recommended if you are a teacher of language learners.
CAN-DO Descriptors, Grades 9-12
If you want to know what students "Can-Do" based on their English language proficiency, this resource will give you a great idea and it's broken down by language domain (listening, reading, writing, and speaking). The descriptors were developed by WIDA.
This is a great in-depth resource that breaks down each DOK level as it relates to ELLs.
(social language v. academic language)
Although a student may demonstrate good use of social language (BICS), it does not mean they have the level of academic language for classroom success. This can be especially true for students who come to our program in the 9th grade. BICS and CALP is also determined by the student's first language development.
This is a free resource that offers a ton of educational videos and resources on a variety of subject areas. You can even find some materials and subjects in a student's first language. However, use with caution if putting it in the student's first language as some students do not come with prior knowledge of the material. Make sure to scaffold the instruction and use Khan Academy for reinforcement.
Education glossaries in 10 different languages. I recommend that you print master copies to keep in your classroom as a reference for students.
Free PowerPoint presentations for various content areas. Uses simple language which makes it easier for beginning ELLs to understand.
Communicate with non-English speaking parents in their first language in order to build teacher-parent relationships.
