AIS stands for Academic Intervention Services, and is designed to provide support to students who are struggling to meet the New York State Next Generation Math standards. The goal of AIS Math instruction is to identify and address student weaknesses in math, and to help them achieve success in their regular math classroom. It is "in addition to" regular math instruction, and does not take the place of a student's regular math class in the classroom.
Students meet with the AIS Math teacher in a small group two or three times per week. AIS Math small group sessions only take place during the RTI block, so your student will not miss any regular instruction. An AIS Math teacher uses things such as mini-lessons, manipulatives, and games, to reinforce or reteach math concepts that are being taught in class. In addition, AIS Math teachers may "push in" to a classroom during math instruction to assist as needed.
The BH-BL district uses a variety of measures to determine student entrance and exit from the AIS Math program, including local assessments as well as standardized measures. We conduct benchmark assessments in September, January, and June. The results of the September and January benchmark assessments are then used to determine which students will enter the AIS Math program. The AIS Math program is relatively new, and we are continuing to refine our procedures. In addition, AIS Math teachers continually collaborate with classroom teachers to discuss many different students' progress in Math. We all work together to make sure that each student is getting the support they need.
Every Pashley family will be notified via both a phone call home, and a letter in the mail, if their student has been selected to participate in AIS Math. Contact will be made before any student begins participating in AIS Math. If a student has qualified to exit the AIS Math program, families will also receive a phone call and a letter in the mail to inform them of this change.
If you ever want to get in touch with me, please feel free to reach out! Email is the best way to get in touch with me, but you can also call Pashley's main office and ask for the RTI room.
A great way you could help support your student's learning at home is by helping them with their math fact fluency, or number identification for younger students. Fact fluency is the ability to quickly recall the answers to basic math problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Having strong fact fluency is the cornerstone to success in math! By the end of 3rd grade, all students are expected to be fluent in their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.
I have provided links to printable flashcards for all four basic operations, as well as other math reference pages, under the Printable Resources section of my website. Please feel free to use any and all of these resources as you see fit!
