Meet your BHASED Behavior Consultant Team!

Amanda and Chelsea are the founding members of the BHASED Behavior Consultant Team ("BHASED BCT"). They have their Masters of Science in Social Work and Special Education: Advanced Special Education Practices with an emphasis on Applied Behavior Analysis. They graduated from St. Ambrose University in 2017 and Northern Illinois University in 2020. BHASED BCT adheres to the behavior principles of the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). By manipulating antecedents and consequences in the environment, meaningful and socially appropriate behaviors increase, while challenging behaviors decrease - ultimately improving quality of life! The focus of ABA is to change the environment, not individuals. Amanda and Chelsea's Social Work background make them uniquely qualified to apply these principles in their practice to honor the dignity, worth, and autonomy of the individuals they serve.

At first glance, the fields of Social Work and Applied Behavior Analysis may seem incongruent. However, that’s not the case at all! When I began my coursework in ABA I felt this was the piece I was missing in my Social Work program, and quickly recognized the benefit of viewing ABA through the Social Work lens. The school environment is such a unique place to learn ABA, especially considering the role of trauma and mental health in many student’s lives. This remains a high point of interest in my everyday work. For me, the learning never stops and I continue to study and research in my free time.

Working with young learners is a gratifying experience and has always been the focus of my professional practice as a Social Worker. Adding ABA to my repertoire has enhanced what I like best about being a School Social Worker in ways I didn’t anticipate! Running experimental analysis and engaging with learners on a deeper level is the most exciting element of our BHASED BCT program. Many associate ABA with dog training. However, ABA can and has been used for a variety of individuals in numerous settings and situations. I've continued to broaden my ability to support learners by training my dog, Avery, using ABA principles. She is certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
