Mr. Stephens Earth/Space Science

Overview: Earth-Space Science is required for all eighth grade students. The course covers four broad areas of study: Geology, Meteorology, Astronomy, and Natural Disasters. During the course of this class we will explore the basic concepts and ideas behind each science, with special emphasis on PA related topics. This eighth grade course is laboratory and hands-on based, stressing “real world” applications.

Grading Policy

Grading is based on the BHASD 2022-2023 grading policy . The students will be assessed on tests, experiments, projects, homework, quizzes and in class assignments. Current student grades can be obtained by logging on to Infinite Campus and entering the student name and password.

Homework Policy:

Homework is assigned on a daily basis and is due at the beginning of the class on the date designated. Late assignments will be accepted using the current BHASD homework policy.

Meteorology

During the first part of the year we will be exploring the topic of meteorology. When it comes to weather most of us don't want to concern ourselves with it until we have outside activities or want to stay home from school. Though most of you may have an idea of what the topic is about, we will be taking a closer look at the basic concepts behind what it takes to make weather predictions. We will be exploring topics such as atmosphere, winds, the water cycle, air masses and fronts. During this time each of you will learn how to interpret basic instrument readings, weather data and maps to make your own weather predictions and become junior meteorologists.

Astronomy

Welcome to astronomy. During this segment of Earth/Space we'll explore the universe as we know it. We'll go back in time and look at early astronomers and their accomplishments as the first true science started to evolve. Then, we'll move forward to the present and talk about modern man, his accomplishments and finally look to the future and speculate about things to come. During each step we'll take time to stop and investigate topics such as planetary formation, stars, space exploration, and celestial objects.

Geology

Welcome to Geology.... During class we will be looking at the physical makup of the Earth, focusing on the various forms of rock formations and the minerals associated with their makeup. From here we'll move forward towards the theory of plate tectonics and the evidence that supports this theory. We'll discover how mountains, vocanoes, and islands have been formed and erroded throughout time. Finally, we,ll look at the important discoveries that have allowed scientists to do such things as determine the interior makeup of the Earth or predict earthquakes and tsunamis. During each part of this section labs that require hands-on work will be assigned. Prepare to to get dirty and have fun, yet learn about the geological history of the region in which you live in.

Natural Disasters

The last part of the year will be spent exploring natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and tornadoes. Starting with how how these events occur, we'll delve into the causes of each event by discussing the history and physical properties that cause these events. Finally, we'll look at the results of such disasters, loss of life, property damage, long term effects, and how to better prepare for future occurrences.
