Free Braids at BHAS
Benton Harbor High School student volunteers braided their classmates' hair for free at an event sponsored by Community in Schools.
The event was held from 4-8 PM on Monday, September 23, 2024, in the new student commons of the high school. Simarri Spears and Emonee Page braided the heads of seven other students. The girls were happy to help their classmates look pretty and feel good about themselves. Everyone was excited about the new braids.
Damarcus Bland, “Snacks”, brought all the hair supplies and enough food to feed everyone.
Community in Schools Sponsored Free Haircuts from 4:00 - 8:00 After School on 9/9/2024
Dozens of students gathered in the New Student Commons for an opportunity to get a fresh cut from three local barbers.
Community in Schools organized the event to help students feel more self-confident about their style and more comfortable with attending school. Many students worry about their appearance, and their concerns can cause them to stay at home.
Community in Schools Director Isabella Vaz made the event inviting and fun. Nick Blue kept the mood upbeat with a variety of music, and Demarcus Bland “Snacks” kept the students well-fed and lined up for the barbers.
