Our book club is designed to be a fun way to read and discuss a book! We have kept the book clubs small so everyone has a chance to share and discuss. In the Google Meets, feel free to speak up or use the chat feature, whichever you feel most comfortable with.

How do things change for Nick after Judy Morgan's article is released?
What did Bud Lawrence do with the word "frindle"?
What does Nick mean when he says, "the funny thing is, even though I invented it it's not my word anymore, frindle belongs to everyone now."?
How did "frindle" spread around the world?
Now has Nick's character change? Why did he change so much?
Ms. Granger says she enjoyed punishing Nick. Why does she say she enjoyed having him as a student?
What does Ms. Granger mean when she says, "A person can watch the sunrise, but he can not slow it down or stop it or make it go backward."?

Week 2:
How did Nick come up with the big idea? What events led up to his big idea? What is a frindle? How do you think Nick came up with that name?
Where did Nick launch his new word? How did his friends help? How did Nick's friends help with the spread of the word frindle? What is an oath? What did they promise to do? Have you taken an oath with a friend or friends?
Why is "getting the big idea" about the word frindle so important to Nick?
What did Ms. Granger think about the word frindle? What in the story makes you think this way?
In chapter 8, Ms. Granger is "furious". Why? What did she do with her fury?
Ms. Granger gives Nick an envelope. What are your thoughts as to what is in the envelope?
The principal met with Nick's family. How did that go? What did Nick say? How did his parents react? How would your family have reacted to this meeting? Do you agree that the principal should have made the visit to Nick's house?
What statement does the title "Freedom of the Press" make in regards to the word war situation? Who visited with Ms. Granger, the principal, Nick?

Week 1:
What does the author mean when he says on page 1, “Nick deserved a list all his own, and everyone knew it?” Think about the pranks he pulled on his class, teachers, school and what they might tell you about his character.
Why does Nick ask Mrs. Granger where words come from? Think about similar situations with your own school experiences. How did this end for Nick? What are your thoughts on this?
Ms. Granger is well known amongst the students. Think about ways in which she is described. What are your thoughts on Ms. Granger? Can you relate her teaching to a teacher that you may have had in school? Would you want to be a student in her class?
How does Nick feel before going to Ms. Granger's classroom to present his report? How did the author show, not tell, how Nick was feeling? When he gets to class, what type of prank had Nick planned?
How did Ms. Granger handle Nick's prank with the report? Did he have peer support? What would you have done if you were in the audience?
