Mission/Purpose/Vision
This handbook is intended to be a tool to help implement local policies and procedures and guidelines established by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) and other sport-specific governing bodies in the administration of student-athletics.

BGHS Athletic Handbook
The purpose of the handbook is to acquaint you with general policies and procedures of the Bowling Green Independent Schools that govern and affect your responsibilities as a coach. This handbook is intended to be a tool to help implement local policies and procedures and guidelines established by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) and other sport-specific governing bodies in the administration of student-athletics. I. Coaching Requirements
See KHSAA Bylaw 25 (Description of Level 1 and Level 2 Coaches)
All Requirements must be completed and verified with the Athletic Director before any coach can attend or participate in practices or games.
Background Check from BGISD Central Office (Call Beth Brewer at 270-746-2200)
Coaches Information Data Base (Must fill this out yearly)
CPR/First Aide/AED Certification (Every 2 years) - See Athletic Director to complete the training
KHSAA Sports Safety Course (Every 2 years) - Online at khsaa.org
Rules Clinic-Sports Specific (Yearly) - Online at khsaa.org
NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching (Once per career) -See Athletic Director for login credentials
a. NFHS Level 1 National Credentials- Complete Courses: Fundamentals of Coaching, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Concussion in Sports, Protecting Students from Abuse (These 4 courses are required by BGISD)
KHSAA Residency Training- Must complete with Athletic Director
Participation in Emergency Action Plan Simulation (Fall, Winter, and Spring)
II. Limitation of Seasons
All Head coaches are responsible for adhering to KHSAA Bylaws 22 and 23
a. Start and End Dates for Specific Sports
b. Game Counts and Scrimmage Limits for Specific Sports
c. Corresponding Dates Calendar
d. KHSAA Dead Period (June 25th-July 9th- Yearly)
i. Dead Means Dead- No Player and Coach Contact, No use of Facilities, No Team Social Media Usage
e. Football and Basketball Pre and Post Season Events- KHSAA Bylaw 9
III. In Season Requirements
a. All athletes must have on file and current with head coach (13 months) - Physical Form
b. Coaches must keep with them at all times (All athletes must be registered on Final Forms Platform)
Tryout Dates and Selection Criteria
a. Coaches announce pre-season training, tryout dates
b. Establish selection criteria if you are making cuts and how they are posted
Coaching Staff Update and Review Emergency Action Plan
a. Prior to the season beginning, coaching staff will review and rehearse
Roster Submission
a. When team is selected roster must be updated on KHSAA
b. Roster must be submitted to AD and Academic Counselor for Grade Checks
Game and Practice Schedules
a. Completed Schedules are emailed to AD (Eventlink, Week at a Glance, Arbiter)
b. Submitted on KHSAA
c. Practice Schedules must be submitted on Eventlink
Stats Submission
a. Each head coach is required to submit game stats to KHSAA within 48 hours after the completion of the contest
b. Failure to comply can result in a fine per KHSAA Bylaw 27
Team Photos
a. Team pictures taken within 2 weeks of team selection and uploaded on KHSAA
b. Email to school media specialist for yearbook submission
Parent Communication
a. Utilize communication tools to send weekly announcements
i. Emails, remind…etc…
b. Social Media- Use to promote program and student athletes and updates of schedules and events
i. Appropriate usage
IV. Academic Eligibility
a. Weekly Grade Checks on Friday of Week by Academic Counselor
b. Students must be making continual academic progress (defined in the bylaw)

a. Section 3 of Bylaw 4- Repeating Students are ineligible to participate in athletics at any level.
b. Coaches will work with AD and Counselors to ensure all athletes are academically eligible to participate based on the number of earned credits from the previous school year.
V. Transfer Rules/Enrollment Procedures of New Student Athletes
New Student Athletes must be enrolled at BGHS before communication with coaches can begin. If a parent or student makes contact with you before enrolling, you are to immediately refer them to speak to the AD or School Principal. Coaches are not permitted to answer any eligibility questions from parents/students who are not enrolled in our school district.
a. Once enrolled the Athlete Registration Form must be completed via Final Forms.
i. If a student is considered Non-Resident- student will be deemed ineligible for one calendar year
b. Transfer Student Athletes must meet with the AD to determine eligibility and fill out the necessary paperwork. This includes domestic and foreign exchange students.
KHSAA Bylaw 4- Enrollment Bylaw for Student Athletes --Specifically for athletes below grade 9
a. Section 2: a, i j- Please refer to these sections under Bylaw 4- Students must be enrolled in the feeder school that is connected to the high school; students below grade 7 may not participate in any high school athletics at any level; A student below grade nine (9) may not participate on the varsity team in contests in the sports of football or soccer.
Home School Students are not allowed to participate in athletics. They must be enrolled in the Local Board of Education feeder pattern in order to participate. However, Home School assembled teams are allowed to compete against our KHSAA sanctioned teams. (Games/Contest must be apart of the game count).

VI. Recruitment/Undue Influence
KHSAA Bylaw 16- In any circumstances consult AD if you are unsure.
a. Recruiting is defined as an act, on behalf of, or for the benefit of, a school, including impermissible contact, which attempts to influence a student to transfer to a member school to participate in athletics, including the offer of improper benefits not available to all members of the student body.
b. Influencing a student shall include the promise or instilling the expectation of an athletic advantage, playing time, employment of the student or the student’s parents or relatives, housing for the student or the student’s parents, scholarships or financial aid for which other members of the student body are not generally eligible, providing other improper benefits, making improper contacts or any other material or athletic reward for which other members of the student body are not generally eligible.
VII. Social Media
Personal Social Media Use
When using social media personally, always keep in mind that you represent our school district, and as a coach you are a very visible public figure. Do not do anything with your social media accounts that would reflect negatively on Bowling Green High School.
School and/or Sport-Specific Accounts
If you run a sport-specific social media account, then please know that you are representing the high school in anything that you post, like, share, retweet, etc. Your usage of such accounts should reflect that representation and positively promote our school, your sport, and our athletes. If you do anything on accounts such as these that the administration deems inappropriate, then you may face disciplinary action.
In order to run a sport-specific account that represents the high school, you will need to do the following:
Get approval from the athletic director
Give the athletic director the username and password for the account (Fill out this form)
Notify the athletic director of any other users on the account
NOTE: The reason for giving the athletic director the username and password is to be able to transfer the account to a new coach in the event the prior coach resigns or moves to another position.
