About Us

St. Joseph's Pen Pals is a Children's Program at St. Joseph's Church in Port Elgin, ON for children in GRADES 2-8. Children who register in the program are paired up with an AGE APPROPRIATE PEER who is willing to write at least one letter per month to their Pen Pal. Their peer might be from BGCDSB or Bluewater DSB, they might be enrolled in a traditional school, a virtual school, or a home school.

Letters may be HAND WRITTEN or TYPED. Letters may be sent via EMAIL or SNAIL MAIL Does your child have special learning needs? No problem. If your child requires speech-text accommodations for writing, we encourage the use of Google Read/Write to write the letters, or a parent can scribe for the child.

If children require prompting, each month, children will have the OPTION to write about a topic which encourages them to deepen their understanding about how they are LIVING THEIR FAITH. For example, in the month of November, children are encouraged to write about how they demonstrate the virtue of responsibility at home, at school, and/or in their parish. They can reflect on their responsibilities as a Disciple of Jesus and discuss how they could fulfil those responsibilities during these unprecedented COVID times. If children would rather write about themselves and ask questions to their Pen Pal, this is fine as well.
