I am Amy Severson, and although I never predicted I would be back in a classroom, I really do enjoy the privilege of being a teacher. My dream job as a child was to be one of Barker's Beauties on The Price is Right or take over Vanna White’s job on the Wheel of Fortune! But in reality, this career is more rewarding. I get to be a part of students' learning - and that is worth much more than flipping letters in a fancy dress.
Educational Philosophy
If my students actually look forward to coming to class or if they go home and talk about what they learned in class, that is a win! I want my students to be excited about learning and to feel safe in the environment where they can share and discuss their ideas. When everyone contributes - we all learn.
BFHS History and Purpose
I started working at Benjamin Franklin High School in 2016. I love being in the ESS department and I love teaching history and English. We learn by reading and writing, but I make it a priority to incorporate hands-on learning with visuals and games. Benjamin Franklin High School has a positive and supportive staff and student body. The atmosphere is a rewarding place for all who enter.
What I’m Looking Forward to...
I am looking forward to the topic of Arizona History, Government and Economics this year. We will be discovering more about the history of our nation and I hope the students will be proud of their heritage and proud to be an American. They will understand more about what makes our country so unique and grateful for the freedoms we enjoy.
I will also be teaching and English class this year, so that will be fun to explore some classic novels with my students.
