Welcome to Ms. Porter's Class!

Welcome to our class website! Here you will find information you will need throughout the year, updated weekly.

Happy New Year!

Coming up:

Welcome back! I hope you had a fantastic holiday break and have had a wonderful time with families and loved ones. Over the next three days we will be completing another round of state testing to see how students have progressed at this point in the school year. Please remind them to try their best!

Let's talk about Quarter 3:

As we get into the second half of the school year a lot of things will start to change! Please read this with your child thoroughly so you are aware of the changes.

Reading: Grades for Reading are no longer going to be Outstanding, Satisfactory, or Needs Improvement. We will be moving to a percentage based letter grade. This grade will be based on comprehension questions we do throughout each week.

-A great way to prepare your child for this change is to have them read something then ask them questions about it. We do this daily in class, but the extra help at home is extremely helpful!

-Please note, any time we practice this skill help and support is given as often as needed but, when taken for a grade, the students must work completely independently. We use these grades to gauge how well your child is reading and their ability to understand what they’ve read. If your child is struggling to read fluently please continue to practice sounding out words as much as you are able. This is also practiced in class each day but the more practice the better.

Fluency Homework: New optional homework for reading fluency is added in quarter 3. Please see the fluency note on the website and watch for it in your child’s yellow folder as well as there will be more specific information an the purpose and expectations for this newpiece.

Writing: We will start taking Writing (Grammar) grades after break as well. These will be based on the weekly assessments you’ve seen coming home already. These have been practiced throughout the year already so the students are very familiar with them. Each week’s assessment will have vary slightly but focus on capitalization rules, punctuation, and parts of speech.
