Key Concepts: Students will review and apply the definitions of mean, median, and mode, and practice identifying outliers in various data sets. They will learn that outliers can significantly affect the mean, making the median or mode a better choice in some cases.
Real-World Connections: Through activities such as analyzing the heights of students, balancing times, and even the prices of sweaters, students will see how measures of center are used to summarize and interpret data in everyday life.
Critical Thinking: Students will be challenged to create their own data sets, determine which measure of center is most appropriate, and justify their choices. They will also explore how removing an outlier changes the mean, median, and mode.
