Please encourage your child to sound their phonograms when they are writing them for homework. We will begin written phonogram testing on September 11, so this habit will help students make the connection between hearing and writing the phonograms.

Handwriting Focus: Correctly place short and tall letters between the top line, midpoint and base line.
Literature: Learn about parts of a book. Learn about narrative test structure - A narrative tells a story and has characters, a setting, and an event (plot).
We are also working on rhyming in class. Please, have students practice on the middle and ending sounds when rhyming.
Math: Solve add to and take from problems within 5, write addition and subtraction equations within 5.

Important Information:
Counting is the foundation for all future math skills and helps students understand how the world works.
Builds brain paths. Learning to count physically wires the brain for logic.
Teaches order. Kids learn that numbers follow a specific, unchanging sequence.
One-to-one correspondence. Kids learn that each object gets exactly one number.
Cardinality concept. They realize the last number counted is the total amount.
Prepares for operations. Counting forward and backward leads directly to addition and subtraction.
At the end of August, students will be tested on their ability to count accurately to 30. In mid September, students will be tested on their ability to count to 50. We count in school frequently, but extra time counting at home will greatly benefit your child. They can count by using objects or just do oral counting while waiting in line at the store or on the drive home. Thank you for your support!
Behavior Communication Forms: As we continue working together to help every student follow our classroom expectations and be the best they can be, you may occasionally see a behavior communication form come home for you to sign and return to school. These forms are simply a way to keep you informed about your child's day and provide an opportunity to talk with them about their choices and how they can continue to grow. Each day is a fresh start, and we are all learning together! You can also monitor your child’s behavior at school by looking at their citizenship grade in Powerschool.
Bathroom use: We encourage our students to use the bathroom before leaving the house and as soon as they get to school. Our time in class is concentrated on academic lessons so we are training the students to wait to use the bathroom until their recess. We will always allow students to go to the restroom during class when needed, but we’re trying to move towards waiting until our recess breaks when possible.

General Rules for Manuscript Handwriting -
All letters sit on a baseline.
For letters that begin at 2 on the clock, rounding conforms to the curve of the circle. Every round letter should fit on the same-size clock.
Lines begin at to go p and are straight and parallel. All letters that go below the baseline to the same distance below the baseline as above it.
Letters or parts of letters are of two sizes. They are either tall or short. Tall letters or tall parts approach but do not touch the line above. Short letters or short parts are half as high as tall letters. They begin at the midpoint between the height of a tall letter and the baseline.
Dots and crossbars are tiny, formed just above the midpoint; crossbars are formed in the direction in which we write.
