*Exploring COLOR with James Rizzi

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

What an exciting start to the school year!! In August, we jumped right into our Elements of Art: Line and Shape while exploring the energetic artwork of Keith Haring. 

*LOOKING BACK: AUGUST IN THE ART ROOM*

Students learned how artists can use lines to show movement, shapes to create figures and designs, and artwork to communicate a sense of community and connection. 

Here's what our artists created:

*Kindergarten: Line Monsters 

*First grade: Shape Robots 

*Second grade: Keith Haring- inspired Dancing People 

*Third grade: Keith Haring- inspired figures celebrating community 

*Fourth grade: What will our future look like?- a Back to the Future- inspired future city 

*Fifth & Sixth grade- Street Art Names inspired by street- art lettering

I have been so impressed by the creativity, enthusiasm, and hard work our students have brought into the art room already!! 

🌈September: LET’S EXPLORE COLOR 

Our September Element of Art is COLOR, and our featured artist is the wonderfully imaginative James Rizzi! 

Rizzi was known for his bright, playful artwork filled with colorful cities, happy faces, whimsical characters, and lively buildings. His artwork is the perfect inspiration for learning about color, color combinations, and how artists use color to create mood and excitement. 

🏙️ What We’re Creating This Month

*Kindergarten: Color Wheel Clowns + James Rizzi - inspired birds

*First grade: James Rizzi- inspired birds

*Second & Third grade: James Rizzi- inspired colorful cities 

*Fourth grade: A collaborative James Rizzi Halloween City for our hallway!! Students will work together to create a colorful, whimsical city inspired by Rizzi’s imaginative buildings and characters. 

*Fifth & Sixth: James Rizzi Faces 

Art at Home

Art doesn't have to stop when students leave the art room! This month, challenge your family to become Color Detectives! Take a walk around your home or neighborhood (weather permitting :}) and see how many different colors you can find. Look for warm colors, cool colors, complimentary colors, and interesting color combinations. 

You can also try creating a piece of artwork together using only three colors. See how many different colors you can create by mixing them! 

Most importantly, encourage your students to notice, talk about, and appreciate the art around them. A quick conversation about a colorful mural, a building, a painting, or even the colors in nature can help children begin to see the world through an artist's eyes.

🖼️ A  Little Reminder for Our Artists

There is no “wrong” way to be creative! 

In the art room, we are learning that artists don't all make the same things- and that's what makes art so special. We celebrate original ideas, effort, creativity, and taking artistic risks. 

Keep creating. Keep experimenting. Keep being YOU!!
