October 2026 🦇 Halloween in the Art Room 

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

October is right around the corner and we are getting ready for a month filled with imagination, creativity, and a little bit of spooky fun! I am so excited about what we have planned in the art room as we continue exploring the elements and principles of art through our Artist of the Month. 

🎃Artist of the Month: Tim Burton

This month, we are exploring the wonderfully imaginative and slightly spooky world of Tim Burton! Students across all grade levels will be creating Halloween artwork inspired by Burton's movies and his distinctive artistic style.  

As we look at Burton's work, students will explore how artists can use line, shape, value, proportion, exaggeration, and imagination to create characters and worlds that are both unusual and expressive. Each grade level will have its own age -appropriate Halloween project inspired by his unique style. 

So get ready for spooky trees, bats, pumpkins, strange characters, and lots of Burton-inspired creativity! 🖤🎃👻

🌈Looking Back: September & the Theory of Color 

September was all about COLOR, and our students discovered just how powerful color can be. We learned that color can completely transform a picture, change its mood, make artwork come alive, and help an artist communicate an idea or feeling. 

Students explored how primary colors work together to create secondary colors, and we learned how tertiary colors are created by mixing primary color with a neighboring  secondary color. We also explored complementary colors and discovered how placing colors opposite one another on the color wheel can make them appear especially bright and bold. 

Our youngest artists in kindergarten and first grade focused on discovering the difference between warm and cool colors. We experimented with mixing and combining colors to create bright bold and wonderfully busy designs. 

And, of course, we put all of that learning into practice through our September projects inspired by James Rizzi! 

Kindergarten and first grade created Rizzi-inspired birds, suns, and moons, experimenting with bright colors and warm and cool combinations. 

Second and third grade created colorful Rizzi- inspired cityscapes, filling their buildings and cities with imaginative details and bold color. 

Fourth grade worked together in groups to create life-size Rizzi- inspired buildings, turning individual student artwork into one large collaborative cityscape. 

Fifth and Sixth continued to work on their street art names, adding color and detail for an extra special personal touch. Those who finished explored Rizzi-inspired faces, a self portrait if you will. 

It was so much fun watching students take what they learned about color and use it to make their artwork truly come alive! 

🎉 Halloween Class Parties- Volunteers NEEDED!! 

*Every quarter classes have the opportunity to earn a class party based on overall behaviors and following classroom expectations. 

Parties will be held the week of October 26th during their class time in art. We will have games, a movie and popcorn. If you would like to volunteer in the classroom, or donate treats please email me at tgraf@bfcsaz.com.

We would absolutely love to have parent and family volunteers throughout the year! Whether you're cutting paper, organizing supplies, helping students during projects, or assisting with special events, your support makes a huge difference.

🖼️Want to share your artistic talents?!...

We are also looking for volunteers who have a special art-related skill, talent, hobby, or area of expertise they would enjoy sharing with our students. 

Maybe you paint, draw, sculpt, sew, work with ceramics, photograph, design digitally, create jewelry, or have another creative skill students would enjoy learning about. You don't have to be a professional artist- if you have something creative to share, I would love to hear from you!
