Elementary Band

We begin band in 5th grade with the instrument options of: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, and Tuba.

FAQ: Which instruments play melody? It depends on the genre of music, for concert bands usually Flutes, Clarinets, and Trumpets play the melody. In marching band, trombones and horns drive a lot of melodic lines. In jazz band, it goes all over but trumpet, trombone, and saxophones usually play melody.

What if I want to play Bassoon, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, or Tuba? We love these instruments too! However, usually for an average 5th grader the instruments are just a little too big or heavy for your current size, so we wait until 6th or 7th grade to switch you over to those instruments.

Is being in band fun and easy? Well anything you want to do can be fun; and playing music with your friends can be very rewarding! Nothing is ever "easy," anything worth doing is always going to require hard work and effort. With music it can be tricky to see the rewards because it takes time and patience. But in band, everyone is wanted and needed...no one sits on the bench!

Why should I do band or play music at all? Being in band is a great way to have fun, learn new skills, and make new friends! You learn how to play an instrument and make music with other people. It takes practice, but you can feel proud after learning a new song or getting better at your instrument. Band also teaches you important life skills like teamwork, patience, and responsibility.
