Thomas Street Middle School
My first teaching placement took place in a Grade 8 French Immersion class at Thomas Street Middle School. At this placement, I learned how to incorporate fun activities in math, science, and literacy. Some of the highlights of this placement was a math project called 'Barbie Bungee' in which we dropped Barbie dolls from a height and estimated and measured how close it could fall without hitting the ground. We also narrated a scary short story, and some students used sounds effects to tell their stories!
MacVille Public School
My second teaching placement took place in a grade 4/5 split class in a smaller sized school out in the country fields of Caledon. This placement was very different from my first one. I learned how to meet students in their different learning needs, and differentiate my instruction. I learned how to run reading circles and Daily 5 literacy activities. I used concrete materials in math classes, and I learned how to facilitate a class with grade 5's learning one subject, and grade 4's learning another. I enjoyed connecting with the male students and inspiring them with reading stories that captured their imaginations!
Brampton Christian School
In my final placement, I taught grade 7, 8 & 10 science. In this placement, I learned how to narrow in and focus in on a specific subject. We took the students on numerous field trips and explored careers related to waste water services and tree planting.
In the grade 10 science program, I designed a website for the students to access in class projects for them to work in in groups and individually in class. I watched students take ownership of their learning, which was a powerful experience!
