French/Italian/Spanish 6 1 Credit Grade 6
Students will be introduced to one of the three languages: French, Spanish or Italian. Students will encounter word roots, groups of familiar word endings, prefixes and suffixes useful in recognizing the connection between English and the Romance Languages. Topics presented will include alphabets and pronunciations, greetings and expressions of courtesy, numbers, colors, days of the week, months of the year and cognates. Students will also be exposed to cultural aspects of the people and countries where the languages are spoken. This class meets every other day.

Seventh grade embraces the first half of the proficiencies outlined in the NYS Language Standards for Checkpoint A. This course introduces the students to the fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading and writing in their chosen target language. Students develop second language acquisition skills by applying it to real-life situations. Students will simulate everyday life through the use of authentic activities such as role-playing, dramatizations and other language skill sets. This course integrates current events and a cultural component.

Eighth grade embraces the second half of the proficiencies outlined in the NYS Language Standards for Checkpoint A. This course reinforces the fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading and writing in the target language. Students develop second language acquisition skills by applying the language to real-life situations. Students will continue to simulate everyday life through the use of authentic activities such as role-playing, dramatizations and other language skill sets. This course integrates current events and a cultural component. Students will take the FLACS A exam at the end of the year.
