Now, more than ever, diversity, equity, and inclusion are priorities for many individuals and organizations. Having the knowledge, skills, and tools to engage effectively with others across differences can often pose a challenge for many of us. This series of interactive workshops is designed to bring about an understanding of racial and cultural equity while supporting individuals’ and organizations’ desire to respond in healthy ways.
The student sessions will provide a safe and welcoming environment for reflection and open dialogues. Student participants will discuss commonalities and differences in race, culture and levels of privilege while examining how racialized history has impacted contemporary culture. Students will use real-life examples and current events to explore ways to dismantle bias, unlearn harmful narratives accepted consciously as well as unconsciously and develop the skills necessary to navigate the diverse world in which they live. The 2021 student sessions will be limited to students in grades 9-12 and recent alumni.
This series will allow parents, guardians and caregivers to engage in reflective activities and open dialogues to develop awareness around the formation of personal values, beliefs, and privileges as they relate to race, language, and other differences. Participants will be introduced to the tools of Cultural Proficiency, explore language for engaging across racial differences, unpack the science behind unconscious bias, develop an understanding of how institutions produce inequitable outcomes and consider how inclusive environments impact engagement, and foster a sense of belonging for all.
