Sources of strength Mission & Vision
Mission: Our mission is to provide the highest quality evidence-based prevention for suicide, violence, bullying and substance abuse by training, supporting, and empowering both peer leaders and caring adults to impact their world through the power of connection, hope, help and strength.
Vision: We believe that many strengths are more powerful than one, and our united goal is to activate and mobilize these strengths in ways that positively change individuals and communities.
What is sOURCES OF STRENGTH?
Sources of Strength, a universal suicide prevention program, is designed to build protective influences and reduce the likelihood that vulnerable youth will become suicidal. The program trains students as peer leaders and connects them with adult advisors at school and in the community.
What are the goals of Sources of strength?
- Upstream Prevention
Most prevention work is actually crisis driven. Our mission is to move upstream in the prevention cycle and raise awareness of protective factors that empower youth and build resiliency. We are not just committed to keeping people alive, but to helping them live healthy and full lives.
- Youth Peer-Led Programming
The program is based on a relational connections model that uses teams of Youth Peer Leaders, mentored by Adult Advisors, to change peer social norms about help seeking and encourages students to individually assess and develop strengths in their life.
- Evidence-Based Results
Sources of Strength is one of the most rigorously evaluated upstream prevention programs in the world. Research partnerships have qualified Sources of Strength on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) since 2012.
