Science Fiction

A Wrinkle in Time, Ender's Game, The Time Machine, Artemis Fowl... some readers LOVE a great science fiction story! Science Fiction writers often explain everyday questions or problems by putting them in the future. Science fiction is different from fantasy. Isaac Asimov was a famous science fiction writer. He once said that science fiction is possible, but fantasy is not.

The Science fiction project is an opportunity to explore imaginary but more or less plausible (or at least non-supernatural) content such as future settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, aliens, or artificial intelligence. You will be able to explore the consequences of scientific innovations by crafting a unique short story.

Requirements for the Science Fiction Project

Students must:

• Choose a scientific concept or scientific law that they are interested in

• Research the concept or law to develop an understanding that goes beyond what is taught in science class.

• Brainstorm the impact of alternative rules or thought processes (i.e. what would happen if we travel to the center of the earth or create new freshwater sources?)

• Compose a 5-10 page science fiction story that demonstrates a thorough understanding of the scientific concepts and explains alternate thought process/ rules.

• Use illustrations or cover art to enhance your story
