The Bethel Middle School Science Department offers multiple pathways for students to learn and apply the skills of scientific inquiry and research.
All students will conduct mandatory long term science project that allows the students the ability to explore a core Earth Science topic aligned to their grade level standards. Students are called upon to apply the skills and competencies developed in other core subject areas to gather, synthesize and communicate ideas to a defined audience using digital tools. The projects will be shared in the classroom and with a lower grade level. This project is graded as a homework assignment. Students will be assigned a completion grades for the project as specific tasks are due as well as a final completion grade.
All students are highly encouraged participate in the spring district wide STEAM EXPO, by completing a project that explores an area of interest or inquiry in STEAM. We offer many project options to meet the diverse needs of our students and after school support. Participation in the STEAM Expo is voluntary and is not competitive.
For students interested in participating in competitive science based competitions, we offer the opportunity to participate in the Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair when there is enough interest.
Through the project, we will be working on the following behaviors:
Self-Management refers to an individual’s success in controlling his or her emotions and behaviors to complete a task or succeed in a new or challenging situation.
Goal Directed Behavior - To be successful, productive, and happy, each of us needs to learn how to set and achieve goals. Achieving meaningful goals is what keeps us moving forward in our lives.
Decision-Making is about how we solve problems and make choices that are based on our values, how we accept responsibility for our decisions and their consequences, and how we learn from experience.
Personal Responsibilty - To be successful in life as well as the workplace, our children need a strong sense of Personal Responsibility, which we define as, “an individual’s tendency to be careful and reliable in their actions.”
