Step into Frankfurt without leaving Birmingham by entering a portal with a life-size livestream to people in our sister city. Frankfurt and Birmingham have shared a vibrant sister city partnership since 1966. From student exchanges to academic partnerships and the Frankfurt Christmas Market in Birmingham, the relationship connects people across generations and creates opportunities to learn from one another.
The Portal is a repurposed shipping container equipped with immersive audio-visual technology - when you step inside, you come face-to-face with people in Frankfurt, full body and in real time, as if you were standing in the same room. The Sister Cities Dialogues mark 60 years of partnership between Birmingham and Frankfurt, and this program creates a space for residents of both cities to meet, listen, exchange, and discover what connects them despite their different everyday realities. The goal is simple but meaningful: to strengthen the relationship between our two cities, and to recognize that international relations become tangible when people actually talk to one another.
The address for the portal is in Hippodrome Square, 25-31 Hurst Street, Birmingham, B5 4BN. The what3words for the portal's location is able.sleeps.budget. We hope to see you there so we can continue to celebrate our connection with Frankfurt!
An open cross-cultural exchange connecting everyday people in Frankfurt and Birmingham for genuine conversation between communities. Participants get to know one another, share what daily life actually looks like in their city, and trade perspectives on culture, identity, what it means to live in Europe and the UK today, and interact across generations and walks of life. Choose from prompts to spark dialogue (city life, culture, being European), or simply have a casual, free-flowing conversation about you, your city, and your world.
