School Counseling Services

Middle School Counseling Program
The middle school counseling program is comprised of professional School Counselors, and Student Assistance Counselors.   Student Assistance Counselors (known as SACs) hold additional certifications in substance abuse and mental health.  Our model is based on supporting students by looping; school counselors are assigned to students in their caseload by grade level, and continue throughout all three years of middle school.  The middle school counseling program is aligned with the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) program standards.

Student Assistance Program

The Student Assistance Program is coordinated by our Student Assistance Counselors (SACs).  The WAMS Student Assistance Program seeks to identify emotional problems early so that interventions may be initiated.   Short-term counseling is provided to assess a student's strengths and concerns.  An extensive list of professional resources for outside referrals is available. Crisis intervention is also provided. Parents may call the Counseling Office if they have a concern about their child and wish to speak to the Student Assistance Counselor.

Individual Counseling Appointments

School Counselors and Student Assistance Counselors are always here to help you during school hours as a safe place to talk.  Your mental health and well-being are extremely important to us.

Students can email your counselor for an appointment, and/or visit the counseling office for an appointment.  Conferences may be initiated to discuss such items as scheduling, course options, standardized testing, academic or personal problems, and community resources. Parents may call the Counseling Office, 908-204-2610 ext 114, if they wish to set up an appointment.  Prioritizing student needs is always a factor in scheduling student/counselor or parent appointments.

During weekends, extended breaks, or after-school hours when your counselor is not available, there are resources to support you.  If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or emergency, always call 9-1-1.  If you need mental health support and are not in crisis, you can access these resources on our Wellness Page

Classroom Lessons

Counselors reach all students by teaching lessons throughout the year.  Various topics related to academic support, and social-emotional wellness are covered.  Some of these topics include study skills, social skills, organization, and time management skills.  School counselors and SACs also support students with lessons on social-emotional topics such as transitioning to and from middle school, coping skills, mental health and wellness, healthy decision-making, and risk-taking behaviors.

Collaboration

Counselors regularly collaborate with teachers, nurses, administrators, and student support staff including the Child Study Team.  Supporting students through the intervention and referral services process is a key component to the counseling department.  School counselors also support schoolwide programming and extracurriculars such as Student Government, Peer Leaders, and more.

Small Group Support

These thematic groups address student needs as they arise and may include topics such as stress management, conflict resolution, family changes, grief and loss, dealing with peer pressure, and navigating the transition to middle school for new students.  Counselors also coordinate support for students who are new to the district with developing friendships and stability for students in their new school setting.
