Dear Ridge High School Community,
Embracing our phone-free pilot, we have an opportunity to rediscover the connections that often get lost behind screens. Inspired by the current research showing how we are shutting ourselves off from others in so many ways, on March 10th we’re launching The Hello Project to encourage authentic, face-to-face interaction among students and staff.
For one argument for this work, listen to The Anti-Social Century: America's Epidemic of Isolation. The speaker highlights how simple human connection—a direct look, a smile, a hello—can transform not only relationships but also personal happiness and resilience. “We’ve become so used to looking down that we’ve forgotten the power of looking up,” he says. The Hello Project is our chance to look up, engage, and reconnect.
Here’s how it works:
Say Hello: We’re challenging students and staff to greet as many people as possible each day—whether they know them or not.
Invite & Include: Encourage new connections by inviting someone to sit with you at lunch, join a game, or participate in a conversation.
Ask & Listen: To make conversations easier, we’ll provide optional question cards—fun, lighthearted prompts that can spark dialogue during study hall, lunch, or downtime.
Why does this matter? Studies show that even brief social interactions boost mood, reduce stress, and build empathy. By intentionally practicing these skills, students can develop stronger friendships, improve their mental well-being, and feel more connected to their community. This challenge isn’t just about school—it’s about building habits that will enrich their lives far beyond the classroom.
Sharing the Experience: We’re inviting students to reflect on their experiences:
How did it feel to connect without a phone?
Did anything surprise you?
Did you notice a change in your mood, friendships, or school atmosphere?
Students will be able to submit their reflections via our Google Form]. The most thoughtful, insightful responses will be rewarded with a gift card and shared with the larger community to inspire others.
We’re excited to see how The Hello Project can transform our hallways, classrooms, and hearts. Thank you for supporting this initiative—let’s discover the connections and happiness we’ve been missing.
