The school counseling program at Mount Prospect offers a variety of small group counseling opportunities for all students. Small groups of three to five students may meet during lunch and/or recess for approximately six to eight weeks. Parents who wish to have their child participate in a small group may contact the counselor. Below is a list of potential groups that may be offered throughout the course of the school year:
New to the MPS Crew:
All students that are new to the school in grades 1-5 are invited to meet in small groups during lunch to promote new friendships and a positive transition to Mount Prospect.
Fun with Friends:
through activities and discussion this group will focus on specific skills related to three social domains: friendship skills, emotional identification and regulation and self- management. Some examples of group topics/ themes include:
Conversational skills
Problem- solving friendship conflicts & size of the problem
Expected vs. Unexpected behavior
Recipe for friendship/ team building
Mindful Moments:
This group will focus on the self-management skills of regulating emotions, behaviors and thoughts, controlling impulses and managing stress through mindful relaxation techniques. Some examples of group topics/ themes include:
Coping strategies
Calming techniques
Body awareness
Student friendly mindfulness relaxation exercises
Booster Buddies:
Self- awareness skills such as self- confidence, accurate self- perception and strength recognition will be built in this group. Activities will assist students in building a strong sense of self. Some examples of group topics/ themes include:
Growth mindset
Positive sense of self
Confidence
Positive thinking
Banana Split:
Students who are experiencing a loss in their families through separation, divorce, or death meet to share their concerns, thoughts, and feelings associated with the loss.
