To facilitate the process of academic planning for 2025-2026, the Office of Curriculum & Instruction and Department of School Counseling have compiled the following resources.
Checklist for acadmic planning preparedness
Presentations from administrators and school counselors
Course Selection Instructions & Worksheets
Ridge Program of Studies and WAMS Program of Studies
Department Presentations
As you navigate all of these resources, the information will help inform your decisions about course selections and planning moving forward. Whichever grade level your child(ren) are transitioning into the next school year, we welcome them to the next phase of their journey.
Step 1: Read the RHS Program of Studies & the Amendments at a Glance
Review the RHS 2025-26 High School Program of Studies. The Program of Studies is a comprehensive overview and sequencing of course offerings. Families should review course options, sequencing, prerequisites, and the grades that are required for selecting courses. Pay particular attention to prerequisites for course enrollment, too. Keep in mind that initial course eligibility is based on the first semester mid-year grade during the scheduling process. Students must maintain the required course grade for the remainder of the year for final eligibility. Review the Amendments at a Glance. This document highlights key changes to the Program of Studies for 2025-2026.
Step 2: Students Talk with Teachers & Review Recommendations
Talk to your teacher about their course recommendations and placements for next school year. These recommendations are not binding, but are provided by the teacher to advise the students and provide information for their consideration during the scheduling process. These recommendations are visible in Genesis by mid-February. Consider your teacher's input as you decide on course requests for next year.
Step 3: Attend Programming Events
View our flyer for both daytime and evening programming opportunities to learn and help to make your decisions. Attend these events for the most current information and guidance related to planning for next year. These events include daytime events for students, and evening events for parents.
Step 4: Plan your Schedule
Begin to map out your courses and have honest conversations as a family to make decisions about your schedule for next year. To help with this, we have several resources including:
use this time management tool to take into consideration all of your commitments
map out your four-year summary
refer to the Course Selection Sheets to map out your course requests
Step 5: Select Courses in Genesis & Students Meet with Counselor
Read the Course Selection Instructions, log into Genesis, and input your course requests. You can also watch our video to help you complete this step. Students who have an IEP can enter elective choices into Genesis; decisions about core academic classes will occur at the IEP meetings as usual. Course placement in electives will be based on total course enrollment and availability and may not be placed in their first choice elective. Therefore, it is important to identify your alternate selections. Once you've entered your requests into Genesis, all students in 8th-11th grades will be meeting individually with their own school counselor to review their course requests. This includes all 8th grade counselors with 8th grade students, and high school counselors with current high school students.
We compiled the most frequently asked scheduling questions that counselors receive during the eighth to ninth grade transition. Refer to the document here. Use the Program of Studies as your resource for all information on policies and timelines.
*Refer to the Program of Studies for details and deadlines regarding any request to modify your schedule.
