We are excited to invite you to the UC Faculty Writing Initiative August 2026 Retreat. This event invites faculty from UC Berkeley and UC Davis to write in community at the beautiful UC Botanical Garden in Berkeley. The retreat includes significant dedicated writing time, an optional professional development workshop on writing each day, and an opportunity to receive one-on-one, tailored feedback on a sample of writing from a professional editor (available to a subset of participants).
“I loved this retreat. It was the single best faculty support event/initiative that I have experienced in my time at Berkeley.”
“I felt cared for as a faculty member, scholar, and writer.”
“It was a fantastic way to reinvigorate my writing and to connect with colleagues from across the UC system.”
"Not only did I finish an article I had been struggling with throughout the year, but I also walked away feeling refreshed and excited to work on other writing projects in the future. I had learned to associate writing with suffering and the retreat helped me re-imagine it as an activity that can bring joy and creativity! From now on, I will always seek to write surrounded by trees. The amount of thought and care that went into the retreat was obvious and it was central to make this retreat such a success."
The retreat is hosted by Lorena Oropeza, UC Berkeley Professor of Ethnic Studies and Faculty Lead of the Berkeley Faculty Writing Collective, and the UC Berkeley Office for Faculty Equity & Welfare.
