Part I

Add the coupling agent to your diazonium mixture and let mixture warm to room temperature.

The video shows a small graduated test tube being lifted out of a large plastic tub filled with ice by a gloved hand. Also in the plastic tub is a small Erlenmeyer flask containing a glass stirring rod and a reddish brown substance that is barely visible through the ice. The pale yellow, transparent contents of the graduated test tube are pipetted into the Erlenmeyer flask, while the mixture is stirred with the stirring rod. The flask is lifted out of the ice by a gloved hand, and we see that it contains a small portion of bright orange liquid. Another portion of solution from the test tube is added to the flask and stirred, at which time a magnetic stir bar is added to the flask, and the flask is clamped in place above a magnetic stir plate. The dial on the stir plate is turned clockwise and counter-clockwise repeatedly in an attempt to get the stir bar in motion.

Heat the mixture to boiling.

The video shows a small Erlenmeyer flask clamped in place in a sand bath. There is a boiling stick in the flask and a great deal of condensation on the upper parts of the walls of the flask, indicating heating. The flask contains a small portion of very dark reddish purple liquid, which is topped with a thick layer of bubbling, yellow-orange foam.

Add 0.50 g NaCl.
